Hiring A Manager
Good morning all!
We have a medium size salon in Northern VA and my wife has been handling the day to day operations. She is now 6 months pregnant so we are looking to bring on a full time manager to take over the day to day before she can no longer bend over to clean a bed:lol: I have another small business that keeps me very busy, so my running this day to day is not an option. I am prepared to give a fair salary, health benefits and a % of the profits to the right manager. My big question is where do I find that person!!! My existing staff is good, but mostly younger people who aren't ready for this kind of responsibility yet. Welcome any and all suggestions, and would love to hear anyone's experiences running a salon this way. Thanks! |

Re: Hiring A Manager
I have found that picking a young person with potential and training them has been my most affordable option.
Someone in their 20's, HS diploma and maybe some college. A dollar or two more per hour and a little praise goes a long way toward motivating someone to work hard for you. Someone that is already capable of managing your business will be expensive and possibly think they know more about running your business than you do. You can't manage your salon on a day to day basis, but you will still need to be involved. An hour or two a day at varying times and your new manager being able to call you whenever they have questions will get through this. Good luck. |

Re: Hiring A Manager
Hm I think I would not go with someone too young then, but I agree with Billable that you're probably best off with training someone yourself and not someone who is already a manager somewhere else.
Good luck! |

Re: Hiring A Manager
Try a Temp agency. They do a lot of the background work for you along with taking care of the taxes & worker’s comp. Another advantage to a temp is if you find that the person is not working out you call the temp agency and they set you up with a another temp. If the temp is the right person for the job you can hire him/her for a permanent situation and that is when you would start with the taxes and worker’s comp insurance ( try before you buy)

Re: Hiring A Manager
I just wanted to ask, how old are the young employees? unless they are teeny boppers, then maybe one of them is responsible enough for such an increase. try training them for a few shifts, and the dedicated ones will more than likely step up. If it doesn't work out with them, keep searching! you may be surprised!

Re: Hiring A Manager
Sad to say it... but you can probably find someone with a business degree that you could train to manage your stores. Unfortunately, there are a lot of degreed young people waiting table and bartending... having not been able to find a business job. I would advertise locally and interview a lot... and a lot more. Remember, you can't train someone to be honest and dependable... but you can train them to clean beds, do scheduling, do payroll, and do hiring/firing. I think you would have to pay them 25K + commissions on store sales... (at least in this area) But for that, they should work their tale off... i.e. earning you money~

Re: Hiring A Manager
Seriously, never judge a book by its cover. Just because someone hasn't walked across a stage with a tassle on their head doesn't mean they won't be fantastic. I had my first job when I was 15 and did 110% cleaning those **** beds!!
