Check on your state's law, you don't have to in FL, but we do anyway.

General topic:
Of course your tracking inventory? Keep a log of theft events and employees working on and before the shifts that report the lost, its been my experience that one name will consistently pop up.

A thief is a thief by nature, if they're going steal from you they steal from you every way they can. Like cockroaches, if you focus the spotlight in one area, they will just scurry off to another area.

It's been my experience that thieves get around to tanning friends or pocketing money, by using some one else's prepaid account. This is a little complex, but tanners develop "time of day patterns" and you can define these patterns by querying your transaction file for prepaid tanners. Then, when an employee's name pops up for tanning these customer outside their "time of day patterns" you can spot check the cameras for the time and day of the transaction.

We find security cameras to be a great investment, and really helps with "Peace of Mind". I wouldn't recommend firing all, that deosn't seem fair? If you are not fair with your staff, it gives them an "excuse" not to preform or be fair with you.
Good Luck.

Re: Sticky Fingers

Money money money - mess with thier money. Something is missing i am going to lower commission across the board until you the employees can find the problem. They will find the problem - no one likes thier money to be messed with.

Re: Sticky Fingers

I pay out of a commmission 'pool'. I add them all together and then deduct the retail value of what is missing from inventory. Any theft affects their checks. So now if an employee steals and another one knows, it affects their money. My 'missing' inventory has almost come to a halt since I started doing the comission that way.

Re: Sticky Fingers

Back again with no exciting new news to report. I started with 1 camera up and no more funny stuff happening. Problem is I still have thief on my hands right? Ended up putting 2 more cameras in now because the quality of the picture on the one just wasnt enough and I wanted more vantage points. I will catch that little thief if it kills me. What is with people. Business is slow enough and how stupid can you be than to steal from your ownself, as that is essentially what she is doing. Yes I have a good idea who it is just cant prove it yet! I really think that if she doesnt take lotion anymore it will start somewhere else, but so far the till is right on? Anyone have any other ideas for me?

Re: Sticky Fingers

Do they know you put up the cameras?

When we suspected someone, we did something that is not allowed as proof in court, but for us it meant that we knew we were on the right track: we put in extra cash in the register during her shift. So if she did everything fairly, she should have a surplus in her register....

The first time we put in $ 5, but her register was exactly correct as if she did not have any surplus. Next time we put in $ 20 and the same thing happened. Then we knew for sure she was stealing and we put up the cameras...

Re: Sticky Fingers

I have has alot of thieft in my salon. I'm sure some of it is customer thieft but I am positive that the majority of it is employee thieft. I know who it is but just like the others, I can't catch her. I am positive that none of the other 9 girls that work for me would steel from me. This one in particular that "helps herself" pockets the cash from lotion sales and then the product just shows up as MISSING inventory. My solution to that problem was to only put empty lotion bottles out for display and lock up the full bottles. This way if anything would come up missing, it's odviously employee thieft not customer as she likes to make me believe. I know better and she knows I do. I've just started to do this so don't have a track record yet to report on. I think this will work though. But like others have said, she will just take it from other places as I'm sure she already is and has been. The only other way she could steel money from me would be through cash sales from customer packages which I have not come up with a solution to that yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Sticky Fingers

If I felt there was one employee stealing from me I would fire them. Indiana is an "at will" state, which means you can fire anyone anytime for any reason (except discrimination) Why wait to "catch them"... their making your life miserable, so get rid of them.

We had an employee that would take lotion out of different bottles and put into sample cups and use them or give to friends. The rest of the staff ratted on her. If you can build a loyal nucleus of staff, they will rat on newbies that steal or come in high or whatever other stupid things they do.

Re: Sticky Fingers

Along with our camera's, we do a daily inventory so we can pinpoint the day an item is missing. It makes it a little easier to find the customer/employee that took the item while viewing the camera's. Our store policy is that if you did not do inventory that day and something is missing, I am not watching days worth of tanners. So anyone that worked those shifts have the amount taken from commission. So far everytime something goes missing it has been a customer and we catch them. Not only are they messing with the stores money, they are now messing with employees money.
