I am leaving my job at a small salon because I just got a new job at one of the nicer salons (a competitor) here in the same town. When I give my boss my two-week notice, do I have to tell him why I'm leaving and who I am working for? I did not sign any sort of contract or non-compete agreement so I believe I'm safe. What is the professional thing to do? Any suggestions?
Actually....maybe I should clarify.... The REAL reason I'm leaving my job at the first salon is because my boss is shady. He does not make me feel comfortable. He doesn't look any of us (the girls who work in the salon) in the eye when he speaks to us, he hardley comes in to the salon to check on us, when we're out of something (like eyewear!) we have to practically beg him to get us more. Also, we have peope calling the salon who say my boss owes them money; checks bounced, unpaid invoices, etc. I just don't feel right about working there. Of course, I can't just come out and say, "I'm leaving because I think you're shady." So what can I say that will be professional?

Re: Working for the competition
Tell him you found a better opportunity at other employment. Maybe leave him a 2 week notice letter to be official about it. You dont really owe him anything about where you are going, so however much you choose to divulge is up to you. I'm always happy when I get a 2 week notice!

Re: Working for the competition
I would tell him where you are going to work...if he finds out later he might cause problems for you thinking you tried to "steal" customers!!! It's not worth him harrassing you about it later, even if he might not have any legal recourse!

Re: Working for the competition
im sure if you told him you were going to work for the comp hed be ****** and probally fire you. if he didnt it would most likely be uncomfortable. like the others said you dont have to tell him where your going.
i see this ending quicker than 2 weeks |

Re: Working for the competition
He only owes you for the hours you have worked. Should you choose to leave, the proffessional thing to do is give a two weeks notice and work just as hard in those last two weeks as you did in your first two weeks. You do not owe him and explaination for leaving. You do not need to tell him where you're going to work. Just move on.

Re: Working for the competition
Well thanks for your advice everyone. I put a professional two week notice letter on his desk and he hasn't been in to the salon (he's very busy) to get it yet. I work tomrrow morning so hopefully he won't come in and read it. That would be uncomfortable. I really don't want to tell him where I am going.

Re: Working for the competition
What is your new Job? It sounds like you kind of get to run the place with little or no supervision. You may find that at another salon you have moore supervision and have to do things another way - a way you dont agree with. I hope you can adapt. Good luck.I like to get a two week notice. The girl that works the most of my hours is leaving in another week for a better job. Not at another salon - i agree with the others if it were i would show her the door and she would understand.
