Suggestions regarding employee
We hired two girls two months ago. I wrote in a different thread about the one bed cleaner that we finally just had to let go. That leaves the girl who we hired to work the desk, as well as keep the salon clean, clean beds also etc.
Seems now since we've let the other girl go she's gotten almost to comfortable in her position. The other day she approached my husband and told him that I had not cleaned the bed properly the night before. When he told me what she had said, I said well we didn't hire her to critique me, and I know if I was in her position, there would have been no way I would have said that to my boss, but probably would have just wiped the bed and gone about my business. According to hubby, he checked it and there was a small smudge that was on the bed. Second, she's been cleaning the beds with soaking wet towels....and I mean soaking to the point that she could wring them out. She's been told that the cleaner we use is designed to use very little and it is expensive so she doesn't need to be using that much. She still continues to soak the towels with it. Now we are finding out that she is giving false information to our clients. She told one girl that the reason her freckles were coming out (when the client asked) was because of the kind of lotion she is using. Then she told a client, who complained that she had gotten burnt, that she got burned because I had put her in the bed for to long and that I should have never put her in that long because of her skin type. Mind you, the client had done max time on this same bed for several sessions. She then made it a point to go to my husband and tell him that I had burned the client! When we told her that we would have another girl starting today and we wanted her to help her out and show her some of the things to be done, she stated that that is a managerial position. My husband said no, we're not asking you to do anything other than help the new girl out. I don't know what she expected. Perhaps an offer of more money? Also, since February, she's clocked in late 15 times. It's anywhere from one to seven minutes late but it does start to add up when we get to the end of the week. It's small things that we're noticing and I could go on and on with more of them but she is driving us crazy. What would you all do? Seems the more we talk to her the more she does exactly what she wants to do. I hate the thought of having to go through training with anyone else but I'm beginning to wonder. My husband is talking to her as we speak and has decided to tell her she has two choices. she can either clock out and go home and come back when she can follow our rules and directions, or clock out and don't bother to come back at all. What would you all do in this case? Thanks as always for your input! Last edited by Laney; 04-10-2006 at 10:27 AM. |

Re: Suggestions regarding employee
Have an evaluation conversation with her. Ask her how she thinks it's going and then ventilate your thoughts. It's your company, it should go as you want it to go. If she doesn't accept your feedback, she has to go. If she accepts it and tries to better herself, give it some time.

Good help is hard to find but she doesn't appear to qualify. What's taking so long?

Re: Suggestions regarding employee
Knx, I'm not sure where you're located but we can't seem to keep help no matter what. I give them a handbook and it's as if they go against anything we tell them. I do not hire anyone in high school who has other obligations. They do tend to get in the way, especially during our busy season.
As for finding any help who is mature, forget it! People in this town are used to starting a job, making just enough to pay a month's bills and leaving. Then they go somewhere else and do the same thing. They don't care if you are the boss or not. My husband talked to her and did what was suggested. Either she changes or she's out the door. The first screw up after this conversation and we're back to looking for someone else. I'm so tired of not being able to find decent help. Seems everyone we talk to who owns a business has the same problem, whether it be tanning or not. I'm so ready to just throw in the towel and be out of here! |

Re: Suggestions regarding employee
Laney,
Does your employee handbook have any provision for quarterly evaluations? If so, I'd put down everything that you just talked about, make her read and sign it. If that means explaining again her job duties, etc. then so be it. If she has any problems with it, she can refuse to sign and pick up her last check in the next few days. She works for YOU, not the other way around!

Re: Suggestions regarding employee
From my own experience, once you call them on the carpet they get progressively worse.
