Ceilings
I've heard much debate about wether to have an open ceiling, or to have something like a drop ceiling. The concern is what works best for the heat that is generated from the tanning beds.
I am expanding our space. Our current space has an open ceiling, and it has seemed to have done well with helping keep the salon cool. The space adjacent to us has a drop ceiling. I am planning to tear it out and leave the ceiling open. This will give us about a 16 foot open ceiling. If I leave the drop ceiling I would have 8 foot partition walls and the drop ceiling at 12 feet, so about a 4 foot gap. Thoughts? |

Re: Ceilings
With a drop ceiling you can easily vent to the space above, but an open ceiling the heat will naturally rise and stay in the upper space (as long as you don't have a fan or ducts blowing it back down).

Re: Ceilings
See, the area I moved into already has the drop tbar roof in the rooms. I have no option of leaving the cielings open. The customers seem to like it, the privacy feeling and moodier lighting but it gets hot. I didnt build the place, so I just gotta kinda live with it.

Re: Ceilings
I just relocated the salon to a space with open ceilings and I love it. Our old location had the drop ceilings and it just didn't have the circulation I would have liked. We also have ceiling fans here too, so that helps alot.

Re: Ceilings
we have drop t-bar and in the summer I take the panels out over the stand ups and put in open grids to let the fans blow the hot air up above the ceiling.

Re: Ceilings
My system doesn't use the plenum return air, it has a couple of ceiling vents that aren't real close to the standups. It works out pretty good because the insulation is right on top of the drop ceiling. Your right though some systems use the area above the drop ceiling as the return air.
