One employee vs. three?

Am I better off hiring 2 or three part-timers rather than counting on one person to cover for me when needed. I think by hiring several girls, they would do their best to 'compete' for the hours. By counting on one girl, I think 'she' would get too confident and slack off because they feel they have job security. I've let one girl go and I have a few other girls that are begging me for a job and I like them all.

Re: One employee vs. three?

Its tough to say....It depends on how you train them....If you have three they might slack figuring the other one will do the work when they come in.....of course you know anytime you put girls together their is a tendency for gossip, jealously etc....If you think you can keep 3 in line go for it at least you won't depend on only one all time, with three you can have alittle more flexibily if one can't work one of the others will be able to....In my salon I have on girl but she and I Have become extremely close I have always made it to were so has plenty of incentive to work hard.....I keep her year round and she knows what a struggle in the slow season that can be to keep paying her but her dedication for that is 100%. I had tried hiring a few different girls but alot of times customers like to see the same fimiliar faces it makes things comfortable. You every go to a restruarant where they have new help all the time....often things don't run smoothe. So my advice is figure what would work best for you, do you like having alot of good employees or would you rather perfect a relationship with one??

Re: One employee vs. three?

That's exactly why I am so torn, Jen. Your absolutely right about everything you said and I am to the point where I need to make that decision. All the girls that are begging for a job are friends and I can predict a lot of drama happening yet having more than one allows for more flexibility. Soooooo torn and i need to get these girls (or 1) ready because busy time is here.....

Re: One employee vs. three?

Does the One you have posses the quailities you need in a good employee? I see it like this I suppose if you can give one a healthy paycheck instead of distributing three small ones because hours are short you will have a happy eomplyee verses three that will complain for more hours I need prom money etc...
If you can etablish a relationship where she feels proud in the business accomplishments she will be such a valuable asset. I reward mine with manicures if she sells her target amount....I tell her you sell we both make money....You have to invest.....3 employees mean competition your right but maybe not the way you and I would compete to make the business succeed.
Three might work well but will they have loyality to you if you can't invest alot into each? you can't reward all of them all.....
Perhaps 2 would be the right fit for you Find the one who is working because she loves this business ,who you can train to run things how you do, give her the most hours and hire a second one for two nights a week and let her know upfront you only need her two nights a weeks and occasionally she will pick up extra hours but reminder of the free tans she gets:)

Re: One employee vs. three?

She's only worked for me 2 times. I do know that I asked her to vacuum and she didn't so that was a negative right off the bat. Came in this morning and everything was done except for that.

Re: One employee vs. three?

I have learned that they are not no matter how hard you try going to put forth the effort we do.... I trained girls for my boyfriends seafood rest. for 4 years, pride in ones work seems to be lacking trait. When I hired my girl I told her I don't expect things to be perfect but If there not **** close or you forget to do something before leaving...I take a $1.50 for every job not done. I take this off of the last hour they work so $1.50 could easily add up to that they worked for free.
I only had to do this once and she got the picture:)

And you'd get hooped for employees when she goes in for surgery.

Feh.

I wish I had 2 or 3 but I don't want to take away from the one I have now because is very dependable and is a CLEAN FREAK!

But then with 2 or 3 you limit yourself to who's actually only looking for a few hours a week which is usually the young crowd.

Re: One employee vs. three?

I think I found her..........I came in this morning and this new girl I hired went above and beyond her duties. The towels were folded perfectly (as I would fold them) and the money was accounted for and the floors were vaccumed. I know these things are too be expected of a paid employee but all my customers told me today that she is really great and they all liked her and her personality. Not to mention she's a little hottie so the guys like that. I'm sooo happy because my gut is telling me that I could leave my salon for vacation and not have to worry. Keeping my fingers crossed................
