Tanning times
I have worked at a couple of other tanning places but the one I'm at now in North Carolina is unlike any that I've worked at in the past. The people here seem to think they will not burn. It seems like everyone who comes in here wants to start out at the full 20 minutes. I look at them like, "Are you nuts?" and try to talk them down to a nice 10 or 15 and tell 'em to come back tomorrow if they didn't get anything.
I do not want to burn any of my customers. I want them to enjoy their tanning session and get the most out of it. I firmly believe that gradually increasing your tanning time is the best way to acheive the best tan your skin can give you. Am I incorrect in thinking this? I know how the tanning process works. How can I convey that to my customers in a way they can understand? Should I let them go the full 20 on their first visit?

Re: Tanning times
Is your state regulated?
Does this salon do a skin type analysis? Exposure times should be based on the clients skin type in relation to the lamp manufacturers recommendations and the clients tanning history. Here is what I do for example: If a client is a Skin Type 3 and the manufacturer recommends they start at 5 mins., I double the time. (5 is a bit on the safe side IMO) If the client has some history of recent tanning we may jump up a minute or 3. Very rarely does a new client ge to go full tilt first time in. Unless they are really dark to begin with, say from a recent tropical trip. And even in that case you have to warn them about any tanlines they may have and might be exposing during their indoor session. Everyone want a tan in the first session, be diplomatic and explain the process. |

Re: Tanning times
We skin type and tell them what they are doing for their first visit after that it can be increased based on how they did.
For those customers that are just a-holes and think they know it all and want to do the full time allowed then have them sign a liability waiver. On it it should say that you recommended x time and they chose to do x time, and if should they burn there will be no refunds or package extensions. Once clients see this form 99% of them go with our recommendation. What they don't realize and my manager put it best last night to a returning customer who had insisted on doing 20 mins and burnt her buns the first time (but client was fine b/c she had signed the waiver and admitted she was stupid) was that not all salons are the same. while she might not have ever got burned at another salon our beds are different and we change our bulbs on a regular basis. |

Re: Tanning times
Just so you know, You are not absolved from fault because they sign a waiver, you are the EXPERT! not your tanner. I do the same thing have them sign a waiver and they agree and start listening to me.
If they have a month unlimited I tell them If I add 2 mins each time you visit you will be at the max time in 4 session, I have 12 min beds! Sessions is where I have to use my judgement. I like to burn their butt just to prove my point, BUT that's not professional. So I tell them this is the max time I will give you letting them get a little pink in my opinion of what will work. If they are not happy THEY TAN THE NEXT DAY FREE! I;ve given away a few free tans, but hey, I wasn't sued for them burning! |

Re: Tanning times
I have it in my release form that attendant will give recommendations as per exposure, but use of equipment is at own risk. I tell them verbally that again we can merely give our recommendation as per their skin type and level of exposure thus far. (usually 1/2 time is the rule of thumb). Most agree, some don't. Those that don't and argue, we covered our butts as "tanning at own risk" and notate in thier file that they didn't listen to our recommendation.
