for instance: free lotions/posters/etc,

I made up a flyer and sent it to DS for our grand opening and never recieded anything from them. I had a local resturant give me lots of free lunch cards and I have them out as door prize, because none of the companys i contacted about my grand opening did anything.

Agreed - DS is probably the most generous of any of them, but they still have a "process" you have to follow. Call in, get them to send you the form, answer a few minimal questions about your salon, send it back with your flyer, give them 2-3 weeks (sometimes faster) and a nice box of goodies will arrive.

ALSO - if you use images from DS (or Cal Tan or others - whoever your favorite is), most offer "co-op advertising" credit, where you can submit the invoices from the advertising you do (a flyer, a postcard, a radio ad, etc) and they will give you a certain percentage back in $$ and/or lotions.

Again - a "process" you have to follow, but well worth taking the time and effort to do it!
