Re: Tanning is a bad Business?
I think that tanning salon owners also need to be more business owners as well too. I find a lot of local indy's are, sorry to say it, dumb blondes with rich husbands, or girls that us some kind of found money to start a salon, with little experience as to how to operate the BUSINESS end of things. I am not accusing anyone here of this as I know none of you. But the situations you see happening are because business requires no degrees to get into, this is good and bad.
No business is really a bad business. Back in the day, a good business was a proffession based business, or industrial based business, then a guy named ray crock showed up and started a burger joint, now you have mcdonalds, which makes billions of dollars. Off of a crappy burger! The secret is not the burger but the system and anyone in this business has to play by those rules, if you indy, make sure you have a system. Then when it comes to making people come in and spend money on your system, you have to make sure that you have a distinguishable, and communicable advantage. The easy way to do this is price cut, and price cutting is great, when used properly. Setting a date to start the promo, then stop, is how to do it safely. And to continue with that strategy. Make sure you learn your industry ratios, and figure out every penny of every expense, this is easier said than done of course. But if you want to make the tanning business work, you need to know how to make any business work. However, there are ways to get the price you should be charging, and convey it in a way that appears to be cheaper, or more valuable. Anyone looking to start the business should spend a little less time trying to figure out if tanning is a good business, and find out what a good business actually is, and then learn that almost anything can be a good business with the right system.
