Re: Tanning is a bad Business?

We all live by a 24 hour clock. In that 24 hours, we all need time to sleep, eat, tend to our personal needs and have a little down time. Lets say that leaves about 10 to 12 hours a day to focus on making money. To the extreme, "The Donald" does a much better job at making more money with the same amount of time than me. You need to ask yourself, what do I really want to do and how much money do I want to make. Making Trump money isn't going to happen in the tanning world.

Re: Tanning is a bad Business?

My wife and I just bought a salon and plan to take over on Feb 13. Before we made the leap of faith, we figured that my full time job would cover our necessities year round. We spent 8 months planning and calculating. We are entering this business with the thought that it will take 1 to 3 yrs (depending on the business) to break even on our initial investment. We'll let you know how the first few months go and maybe that will give you some more insight.

Re: Tanning is a bad Business?

Create an untouchable account my dears..... and place a set amount into each week during the BUSY for the bills in the SLOW....

Create another account for Sales Tax (if your state collects it)

At the end of each sales day - - transfer THAT AMOUNT of tax for the day into that account......

Your first hurdle will be learning - - - just how FAR do you really have to BEND to keep / make a client.....

Remember - - - once it's LOW it's hard to go higher..... so your NORMAL PRICES should be boaderline outrageous.... and your 'Specials' will be a great deal :)

You are NOT a charity.... so when you have USERS.... ask them to pay your rent for the free tans they want or the free lotions they want.....

FACE it as a business..... and DON'T DO anything the local Walmart or Target would do for em......

I wish ya the best~est!

Re: Tanning is a bad Business?

I/we actually spent 3 years with our salon before we opened it. In five months time we are almost breaking even and are hoping here in this next month we will be breaking even all across the board. If you want to do it, do it, but know that it is a lot of hard work. I myself work the salon from open to close Monday through Friday and my husband is here from open to close on Saturday and Sunday.

Re: Tanning is a bad Business?

just one thing to add to everyone elses good info ... if you can put something else in your store such as nails or massage to offset some of your costs during the slow months would make a huge difference!

good luck

Re: Tanning is a bad Business?

I think you should go for it. At 1 point I was a salon owner. I had a partner and she did horrible things to me , I walked away. I lost everything but the only thing I regret was going into it with a partner. Now I work for someone. It is video/tanning,weird huh? Not really it is going great the only problem is employees. All I can say do it but watch out for employees, they are so different now.

Re: Tanning is a bad Business?

Oasis Beach same way here its the only way to have something at the end of the day, I have had some pt in the past but never left them so just decided to work it myself. Glad to here someone else is also doing this. I was beginning to think that Ive been doing everything wrong for 6 years. Cause everyone seems to talk about employees, but neither my husband or I work other jobs this is our income so I guess that makes a difference too.
