I'm still scratching my head as to why anyone would work for $3.75 an hour. Get fired and you may be able to double your income with unemployment compensation. What the heck, you might as well go work for egplant!

Internships are for career-lead paths of progression. A marketing intern is joining a company where s/he will earn $35k and work up to a potential VP level (6 digit income). Working in a tanning salon is not really equating to an intern program.
In California the labor law is very specific about types of jobs that are salaried, and as mentioned, it can not ever be used to fall below min wage. If I were you, I'd start looking. Get an offer and then make a hard decision. Do I sue? The downside to going to your boss with a competitor's offer is that it is HIGHLY likely that is the last raise you will get. (Yes you never got one to begin with...but now they'll feel they can work you harder for the extra $$). Plus, money isn't a solution. People I've given the largest raises are sometimes the first to leave (this is at my day job...not my tanning salon). If it's a crappy situation now, it'll still be a crappy situation at $9 an hour. And then you'll be right back where you started. Side Note: If no one reports to you, I'm not sure you could be classified as managerial. Do you order supplies? Make purchasing decisions? Hire People (no to that one, right?) Deposit large amounts of cash? These are things I did at age 18 as a Burger King manager. Back in 1988 I was making 8$ an hour with those duties, while managing a 6 person store. I was salary too, but I negotiated my hours to no more than 50, and never past 12am, as closing managers were typically there till 3 am doing inventory counts, deposits, etc. You have some tough decisions....but let me tell you this....if your work ethic is half what it sounds like on here, you're worth 5 times what you're getting.... at least from the pool of employees I've seen lately from the 16-20 year old age group. (It's not a great deal better for the 20-40, but at least the maturity level isn't as much of an issue ) |

Amazing...Johnny and Aloha will agree when I say that for us (west coast) to find a quality manager will cost min 25k/yr. Run, Run, Run...And dont look back. Okay, well find another job first...and then run! But of course (so as not to burn a bridge), give proper notice. Or, in the case of my employees at least tell your friends to call for you and say you're not showing up for your shift in 5 minutes! (Hope I have conveyed a little hostility!!!):)
If you are good, detailed and have above average sales and communication skills, you can market yourself for more. Perhaps, as is true in many areas of life, Ones presence is not noticed nearly as much as their absence. |

Thank you guys so much for all of the great advice! I am going to take my certifications to some other salons in a diff area and see what happens with that. I waould like to fing just one full time job that pays good. If that doesn't happen maybe I could find a part-time position in the afternoons somewhere.I love the tanning industry and hope to have better luck with the current situation. ill keep u updated, I should know something today.

Now, let me pick out the FALSE REALITY people are living in.
"My boss made my car payment once without taking anything out of my check. Again i tell you he is doing this because you are young." This is nonsense. Your boss was trying to get into your pants. Final answer. YOUR PERSONAL EXPENSES has NOTHING to do with anything. "I JUST GOT A CALL FROM MY BOSS'S WIFE AND IT DON'T SOUND GOOD...AFTER I GOT IT SHE SAID SHE DIDN'T NEED ANY MORE HELP! THAT REALLY HAPPENED TO ME LAST SUMMER! WHERE ARE ALL THE GOOD JOB?" Welcome to REALITY FRIEND. What do I tell you people? Listen to me cause I'm not living in dream land. You are SCREWED. You are now going to be making $0/hr...Where are all the jobs? What jobs are you talking about? The economy is in the toilet but that's not supposed to affect someone with zero credentials? Try Walmart. |

True Mike B. In N Out assistant store managers were making around 40k about 10 years ago (in Laguna Nigel). Even in my day job, I was hiring at $14-16 an hour and it was hard to find good, experienced help. I finally just hired someone with no prior electronics experience, but with very good phone and customer service skills (I manage a 12-13 person tech support group).
Nicetan, care to elaborate? I heard on the radio about a recent study by San Diego State University. The public schools felt standards were too hard and student self-esteem was low. So they've spent all this time and energy praising and puffing up recent high school classes. The result? They score the worst at science and math, but have great self esteem. They feel great about being the worst. I'm not sure if this was a California school thing, or nationwide...but it makes you wonder. |
