Don't kid yourself. Table operators in Vegas skim thousands everyday under the watchful eye of good security systems.

Happy with Helios software tied to T-Max. Also have real time, remote and recording video of lobby, stock room and parking lot. Have fired two managers in past year for theft - doesn't say much for my ability to pick smart people to hire but sure can catch them.

Re: No customers stealing! Just employees!

ok knx is correct points for that-but have take them back for the suck it up comment.

Now some of you have very helpful comments here.
Let's summarize and add to it..

~ get a camera
~Connect your pc to the timer.
~make them do a shift count of everything including the samples, display of goggles and be sure it is detailed.
~Have them count the drawer to a specific amount..and the staff member changing shift the same amount.( then have each staff member initial that they agree to the numbers on the the shift sheets---that the bottles, merchandise and money was correct.)
The difference between teh starting and ending cash is dropped, along with eth checks and CC receipts for that shift.

~ As for employee tans even if you give them to you staff at no charge..it is rung thru the system as a nominal amount such as 5 bucks base bed 12 bucks big boy bed.

Follow me so far??
Good..
The employee can not tan on thier shift so...( well maybe closing before they leave)
Now when and employee wants to tan they must be rung thru as cash receipt is printed and signed that that employee used it. AND DROP IT with the shift sheet the money will be off but the receipt make it the correct amount right?

This will only help if you have your PC set that each tanner can only tan once every 24 hours and the staff members cannot override this.
BAM it is recorded. and now deductable for those of you looking at the big picture. At teh end of teh month print off thier sales history ( which should contain thier tanning..and lotion usage( that should have been rung thru too) =deductions fgr you.

There are ways to control it..it just takes time and a plan.
We never plan to fail we just fail to plan. Employee theft control is equally as important as marketing.

JMHO
Good luck.

Re: No customers stealing! Just employees!

Technically, it's illegal to steal. However, in the U.S. it's innocent until proven guilty, and even if you catch them red-handed, until it's proven in court, the thief is technically not a thief. I'm still a believer in surveillance cameras. Also, establishing a pattern of periodically showing up without warning keeps them on their toes.

Re: No customers stealing! Just employees!

Unfortanely, we as business owners see these kind of things on a daily basis. As it is illegal to hold money out of a check, I always use this method. I cash their check out of the drawer, then count out the money to them, and then inform he of what she owes. Also currently use Suntouch software connected to TMax timer, so no more tans for free!!!!! Good luck

Re: No customers stealing! Just employees!

Wow.

All I have to add here is that from what I understand, the majority of retail theft is internal. Most people don't think about this when opening a business.

I worked for two people (not in tanning industry) that had two people embezzle funds from the company. Tens of thousands of dollars, because of the lack of checks and balances. They were both trusted and well liked employees. One of the owners that I worked for said that you would be amazed at what your employees would do to you, even if you are good to them.

You can only control so much, the rest you kinda DO have to "eat". I worked for a t-shirt screenprinter that had her key, long term (10 years plus) employees give away free printing (it was a large t-shirt screenprinter) to their friends. I know because I saw the screens and I am like, wow I don't remember charging for these!

Anyway, I think for people that have never run a business this is a huge reality check.

Re: No customers stealing! Just employees!

It's amazing the crap employees will pull! I've also seen it work the opposite. A friend of mine is a personal trainer and was training a girl that worked in a tanning salon. This girl was "paying" my friend for her training sessions in tanning sessions. The problem was the girl was just working there what was the owner getting out of this little "agreement"....it's rampant in the tanning biz because it is very difficult to trace and like someone else said, employees don't think of it as "theft" , it's like they are owed it or something!? Employees will rob you blind if your not careful!
