Agree with amsolak. Before I opened my own salon I managed one that saw 300 clients during season. I had a MILLION and one things to keep straight on the front & nothing was more aggravating than a bed cleaner not doing their job. Remember that you're FDC deals with aggravated customers, phone calls, sales, and much much more. Nothing you said sounded like she didn't have pride in your salon...just that she was frustrated...WHICH I WOULD BE TOO. Step up & take care of the situation. Have your FDC check to make sure that the bed cleaner has done her duties correctly before she clocks out for the evening.

OK, I am going to say it - some businesses should not hire handicapped or mentally challenged individuals. I am sorry but your customers will not cut YOU slack when they see a crappy half-sanitized bed because you wanted to hire someone who is not up for the job. And for what I just said there is no US law that I know of that says otherwise.

thanks for the input
my bed cleaner cleans beds well
we are talking about mirrors 8 of them plus 3 windows
is it worth being miserable about? does she have to complain if she has to do them?
it takes 3 minutes i know ive done them a million times
i do praise my fdc but i cant justify firing this handicap girl
who works up a sweat for minimum wage
because my fdc doesnt want to clean a few mirrors
they are both great employees but im a get a job done no matter girl myself
and i cant see complaining to management on a weekly basis because you have to clean a few mirrors
maybe its just me but isnt easier to clean a few mirrors than clean a million beds...
i understand that i stated whose job it is but i also know its 3 minutes worth of work and if thats the
case i'll clean the mirrors myself...if my fdc was cleaning beds etc i could justify all the complaining
but i cant justify it over this

Good point. I would have a salon staff meeting. Maybe everything can be hashed out then...hopefully.

Tell the FDC thats the bed cleaner's job is to clean beds - PERIOD. Tell the FDC thats its her job to do all her tasks plus clean the mirrors and windows. PROBLEM SOLVED! Also stress that you pay her more than the handicapped girl and you love having her as a valuable asset to your salon.

The front desk can be alot to manage, especially in the busy season. It is hard to keep employees happy even when you give them everything it seems. Its especially harder with hairdressers (we've expanded to a beauty salon) and they have a lot of demands. Anyway, I agree with the employee duty list. I created one for each employee at my salon and it has helped tremendously. Now my desk clerk accepts that her list expands at will but I take good care of her and she knows it. My bed cleaners are responsible for cleaning beds, doing the laundry (we use real towels to clean beds), cleaning and stocking lotion displays and mirrors in every room and vacuuming at night. I think it absolutely should be the bed cleaners duty to keep the mirrors and rooms for that matter clean and in order. I praise your compassion and giving disabled people opportunities but remember, this is a business and if employees are unhappy they will eventually take it out on the customers or complain to them which is never good for business. So I would talk to the bed cleaner and try giving her a list and tell her to make sure each thing is done before she leaves and tell the Front Desk Clerk to be more understanding while you address the issue. Hope this helps.
