I have the hardest time trying to get employees to think on there own during slow time. I have to leave them "To Do" lists to get stuff done. They would much rather do nothing and watch CNN. How hard is it to look around and say " I should wipe down the pictures or the walls. Any suggestions for motivation would be great.

If you first hired them, you should have had a list of responsibilities included in their job description. If not, then you can leave a list up of things to do when they are not busy....Have them sign off on the things the accomplish. After you look at the jobs done, give them a "thank you" at least. You can also give a small gift to those that do things without asking....

When I hire someone. They must sign off on a paper that goes into great details on everything we expect from them, including attire, cleaning ect... When I leave a list it is for the whole day, I specify one cleaning project for each employee, and have them sign off. I do thank them. But it seems if I don't leave a list it doesn't get done.

they don't care. its not their business. they only work for you. i call them now my salon babysitters..saturday my employee called me to tell me it was really slow can she go home.i said yeah sure whatever.i came in at 1:30 she made $6.00 with 8 clients.(p.s. her boyfiend was sitting here with her MAJOR NO NO) i worked had the same amount of clients and made $200.00.They do not care.
