N.T.T.I. does offer an online program, true. But they also certify trainers, such as our trainer. These courses are offered at just $30. The online program doesn't cost as much if you buy multiple certifications at one time; and they all don't have to be used at once.
N.T.T.I. handles all the background work for our trainer so she can do just that, train. They contact state cosmetology boards, write and submit manuals, print certificates, and so forth. I'm not putting down Smart Tan, just defending our route, which is with N.T.T.I. |

When our trainer was certified through NTTI; Rick Mattune was still with them. He has a degree as listed above. He developed the program, the manual, etc. Because our trainer is already certified, I am not sure of their current training methods.

I say Smart Tan.
I have ran into employees of other salons who have taken other classes and they knowledge level is not the same. This is just my opinion of course, but the knowledge and continue education makes a difference in sales, you can tell who has learned what from the class they have taken. So Smart Tan is the one we choose. |

Well, NTTI trainers are TRAINED by NTTI, but that doesn't mean all trainers are equal. Personally, our customers feel very informed and empowered when they leave our trainings. We have even had owners come back each time they bring a new employee just to sit through the class again. I wouldn't say it has anything to do with NTTI directly, but rather the trainer and how that trainer presents the material. I would think this would be something you could deduct yourself, but we have a very good response from our trainings. Just because someone went to school at Yale doesn't make them the best professor in the world. Just as some of those employees you talk about that were NTTI certified. The class could have been top-rate; but that doesn't mean the students will grasp everything; or use it once they leave. I'd love for you to sit through one of our classes and make your decision.

I think Rick has more knowledge in the tanning industry then anyone I know. I also feel he is a great teacher. Correct me if I am wrong, but at the time Rick was with NTTI not just anyone could be a trainer.

Smart Tan certified in '98.
Dropped it after 4 years because our bill for the next year came on a day in November when I hadnt even taken in the amount needed. It made me rethink how it had even helped me. We have had the same main employees since then. I think for the most part it is basic info that one could find out on their own. No need to certify temporary part time employees cleaning the beds. They wont be around after the main busy months. We only have a second employee about 3-4 hours a day during the busy season. [ This Message was edited by: mmerci1 on 2004-12-17 14:09 ] |
