100watt lamps hardly ever get black ends so hopefully you are talking about VHRs or equiv. Most 160watt lamps start to get black ends pretty quickly. Although they do not mean the lamp is bad it COULD be a sign of stress. BE SURE to be using electric starters and that your beds are cooled properly. This will keep it to a minimum. Also what MJ said.
