Yeah, barter.
Verb 1. Exchange goods without involving money. Barter is a simple form of trade where goods or services are exchanged for a certain amount of other goods or services, i.e. there is no money involved in the transaction. Barter trade was common in societies where no monetary system existed or in economies with a very unstable currency or a lack of funds. You've never for example, had a friend who was an electrician help you out with some needed work for free, but then gave him a bottle of rye for his time? Whatta twinkie. |

Are you kidding me, Electrician...Rye. I must be so out dated, I did not know we accept trinkets for payment. |

"a friend who was an electrician" is what it says.
You've never had a tradesperson who is a friend, that has help you out without an invoice being presented? Hmmmmmm. You need better friends. |

I never realized bartering child labor for tanning services was so popular in Canada.
In the US, we have minimum wage laws, child labor laws, workers compensation requirements, and strict payroll tax laws and OSHA enforcement. And I pay around $1.00/hr above minimum wage to keep good help. McDonalds starts kids at $7.00/hr here! |

I'm not saying it's popular, but it's not unheard of either, and who said anything about children.
According to your interpretation, you wouldn't be able to accept any "free" help from anyone and then give them a gift as a token or your gratitude. "You've never had a tradesperson who is a friend, that has help you out without an invoice being presented? Hmmmmmm. You need better friends." |
