I did tried it with a couple of local High School Girls that tanned at the salon. It was a real problem, they were to work eight hours per week for free unlimited tanning -- any level beds. They would schedule to work and wouldn't show up if something else was on their activity schedule for the day ( such as a boyfriend or a school ball game). They would also come in and leave early for no reason and leave me in a bind. I heard the comment from one -- "It isn't like this is a paying job". I don't know what else you would call it -- Tanning for Work. So I did away with the exchange program and hired Bed Cleaners (at minimun wage) that I could depend on.

I had more than one working for tanning rather than pay, but when you are ultra busy and need them and they aren't there. That is a BIG problem. It is impossible to keep up with everything without the help. I don't like to keep my clients waiting while I have clean beds. I want to move them through. So that is why I went to paid help. I needed people who were committed in order to service my clients.

I'm thinking that it might be a great way to test their accountability.
I have 3 or 4 show up every week asking for a job, but they don't seem to interested in tanning. This would let me know how interested they really are! I can promote them later. Most of the kids I talk to are in college & have weird schedules so, it might be a way to work around their schedules. It seems I always have stuff to do around here. |

Start with this practice being against federal labor laws and most state's labor laws.
Consider the IRS implications. Consider the uninsured liability. Consider the ramifications of lying to the IRS and Worker's Compensation Insurance. There are many more reasons this is considered an unprofessional practice. Just say no. |

EZ, you may be wrong here. The fair labor law states that you must pay the person for each hours work they perform. However, it does not say how you are to pay them. If you are paying them, you must place them on your payroll and do the appropriate paperwork or hire them as consultants or outside service vendors. If you are providing them services,(and this includes barter), they are considered consultants or outside vendors and are required to do their own paperwork.
