Do all of you let your employees have use of the phone? One of my employees was on the phone for 47 minutes...the bill wasnt high, but its just the fact that she was on so long. I'm really thinking about letting her go. There is just tooo many things that are bothering me about her... What to do?

You had better make sure that you have a protection for long distance on your phone...
My question would be how is she working if she is on the phone? Isn't the phone in place for business purposes only? I could understand an emergency use, but this doesn't sound like that is the case!

I'm not really concerned about the cost, $2.80. Its time she spent on the phone. Yes that does make me wonder the the h**l shes doing all night. She was late last week, only 10 minutes BUT it was an opening shift. fortunatly I was there already, a customer would have been waiting in the parking lot if I wasnt there. She's left room dirty, didnt turn the outside sign on when dark, left the air conditioner on at night at least 3 times, How much more should I let go?

First, you can have long distance blocked or in some area's just not have. second, she's not doing her job.

My problem is keeping my staff off their cell phones. It's something we will be talking about at our staff meeting tomorrow.

Long distance? If she doesnt have the since to not call long distance you need to get rid of her. My employees know to stay off the phone. Short conversations. This time a year I am a little more lax and they know this. Right now I will even let them take a call on a cell phone - not at the counter though. They know from feb 14 - july 4 it is a different story. Have you told her about it before? If not just tell her. These kids may not see anything wrong with it. Sometimes just letting them know will change it. If you have let her know - well you should be letting her go. She is stealing time and money as far as I am concered.

I have the same problem and my policy is NO PERSONAL PHONES CALLS and NO CELL PHONES. They get 1 warning and then its no commission for the 2nd time, and bye bye for the 3rd. I feel like i'm paying them to work for me, not to talk on the phone. I have caller id and can see when their friends or boyfriends are calling and just keep track of it till i get the chance to talk to them. This time of year... yes its slow, but you give them an inch and they'll take a mile even in peak season. Well at least for me and i'm in a college town and really can't seem to find people who want to work. They think a tanning salon is a place to hang out and goof off...sorry not on my dime. I would say let her go and hopefully set an example for the rest of the staff. You don't need someone like that.
