Neon we all know you dont take checks - maybe its different up North. You are the only person I know of that doesnt take checks. Even the taco bell here takes checks.
I have not had this happen. What has happened in this salon when I was just a bed cleaner. We were robbed after hours twice. They took cash and checks. Since the computer records form of payment we asked everyone to write us another check. Most people did as I recall and were happy to do so. We did have to tell them if the orignal check did some how clear we would take care of it. If someone did not want to write another check we had to eat it. Ask the customer and if they write you another check - great. If not eat it and move on and more carful. A customer should not have to put up with your mistake. Even if they did not give the check on purpose it is your fault. It cost money to stop payment on a check. I would never let the customer know that we though it was her fault unless you have absolute proof. Which you do not. Ask for another check and or eat it and move on. I am telling you it is not worth your time to pee someone off about this. When it comes right down to it how much are you going to actully lose. A lotion your cost $10 - $20.
10 visits, 30 days - $6 - $13. Think about it - is it really worth it.

I haven't written a personal cheque in years! Internet payments, automatic withdrawls, debit/bank cards, credit cards people? Why do you think someone dreamed up EFT's.

Personal cheques are old-school and shunned by lots of retail businesses due to the hassles they create. If someone doesn't have a bank card, I would wonder why, no money perhaps?
