I always get nervous this time of year when I see the old bank account heading south. Haven't gone broke yet, but still worry.

If I only knew then what I know now, about the tanning business, I would have waited till busy season to take over this salon. (I think I was broke when I started.. It can only get better...) RIGHT?

NO. Incorrect way of thiking. You would have shown EVERYONE that you are an amatuer (which you are) and that's bad.
Learn your salon. Run all the beds and A/C and everything to test the electrcity. What does it take to get the electricity back on if the breaker goes.
How about the bathroom? Can it handle heavy traffic without backing up?
Get samples of EVERY LOTION YOU CAN THINK OF and try them all.
Dance and jump up and down on the beds to test out the strength.
LEarn the ups and downs of your equipment. Maybe the timer is a little jerky if you press it weird or onve in 3000 times only half of your tanning bed comes on. Figure out what to do in these situations.

Things that are real minor can make or break your sanity if they happen during peak season.

Every one should start in the slow season. It would give you a better chance of staying around for awile.

I agree...We've already had a number of things go side-ways and I shudder to think of what we would have done if we were busy.
We've gotten the software figured out.
Already blown a fuse.
Worked out electrical bugs in the beds...
Replace some bad lamps.
We've also been able to ask our clients what they want in a salon...Interesting responses!

One question I ask them is are you a "year round tanner?"
Depending on their response, I ask where they have been tanning and why they are considering a change? Mostly they tell me that they a literally attacked by over zealous sales girls trying to force lotion on them...They get tired of it everytime they go into the store. Funny thing is that they have all purchased lotions from me.
We don't want to do what our competitors are doing.
