That's what I thought too! Unfortunately I was be bit outspoken (can you believe it?) with them and I figured I'd be the first one they'd come and visit.
It is a Federal Law believe it or not, and if they wanted too they could actually investigate your business including auditing, in order to determine a rev. amount that they deem attributable to background music. |

I agree with you, but it's the idea that really bugs me. Did you receive a letter from them a few months ago like I did? It bugs me that half the businesses in this town won't be paying it...........

That is the most ridiculous thing that I have ever heard. And, I was thinking about relocating to Canada to work with Neon - DRATS! Soon I will have to pay a license for the street performer outside of my salon for providing me with background music. It's a new tax imposed to help the welfare people that live next door to me afford that shiny new SUV. Soon the electric company will charge a salon license fee for air conditioning because it helps people not die of heatstroke in your salon. Or, a license to the city for a permit to allow your customers to park in your own parking lot, because it helps you make revenue to let the people park. And, the bakery next door will charge a smell license tax for the wafting scent of cake that indeed brings more people by to tan and eat cake after that. I can't believe with all the free trading of MP3 and music on the internet that they would even spend their time trying to collect a fee on this bull*hit. Go underground, bring and play a ghetto blaster in your salon, and hide it in the trash can if any inspectors come in. Pretend you are in the mafia / a so cal gangsta while you hide it, makes things more fun ya know.

So, can we claim a rebate from them, since maybe it was the background music that drove the customers away? |
