Taken from another thread,TNT suggested that
some salons are hobbies Neon was a little insulted,Salons are real bussiness's. Well,There both right. In some parts they are still just hobbies, some quick cash for that new car or a new boat. That was the thinking when all tanning units were barbershops or hair salons. Neon also said we survived all the crap. Tanning salons are now on there own.Customers should be thankful. They are run like real companies. But are we still too small? Where do we go from here? Do we sit idle now? Do we revert and take on other services? Just where should we be headed? Flick |

If all the salons across the country truly treated the business as a business and not a get rich quick, you would see more unity in this industry. You have the big boys who have the money to make it big, but the salons are not ran by professionally trained employees. Yeah, you have the salons that are owned by 1 person with 20 beds but not all the employees sell or educate like the owner. You look at the big boys who were doing franchises 2 years ago...alot of them our no longer franchising or they have sold to other folks. I may be small but my deal for opening was to work for myself, abide by the rules, make smart tanners out of my clients and to give back to my community and maybe along the way help someone that I would have not otherwise be able to do.
I love what I do, I like being able to close if I need to for family emergencies, and I may complain about the slow days, but I always can find something to do. I may be small, but to me I am the biggest and best in the world. THink big and you will be big. Think small and you may get stepped on. Keep it professional and never ever stop learning and think you know it all. |

Remember, this is my opinion. To me, it's not a hobby or a business, it has become my life. Unless you are very very wealthy, you have to sink your heart, soul, along with all your time and $$$$ into a salon in order for it to work. You have to constantly breath new life into a salon to keep up. I'm not sure that I believe you have to have $30K beds in your salon to be profitable, that goes towards location. Also, you have to be happy, even if it's a "stressful" happiness. People come to tan for relaxation. I'd rather tan somewhere where the employees are nice, friendly and know you by name.

People change hobbies.
Managing is way different than owning. Been on both sides of the fence. I was in Upper management for 9 years over seen 13 stores. Owning is a whole different ball game. This isnt the little league its the majors. So to say. |

I think as far as chains go,There only as good as the people you hire. In our give me, give me world of today finding
truly good mangament people is becoming harder and harder. A family operated chain has a much better chance of survival. A small chain, 4 or 5 stores operated in a concentrated area, operated by a single family I think will have a much better survival rate than a single store or a very large chain. Margaret,I would be pulling my hair out over seeing 13 stores with out any help. Flick |
