As someone who has operated 150 retail stores in 48 states and Canada, I am uniquely qualified to weigh in on these questions. I have posted repeatedly 'it has to be two things: it must be fun and you must make money. If it ever stops being either of those two things, you won't be doing it for very long.'
What I have seen happen to business managers is they have a fire in their bellies when the business is born and as it matures, going through the mundane tasks of running a business, they end up working IN the business instead of working ON the business. And at that stage some or all of the fun is gone. To keep it fun and make money, you must set time limits for yourself to work in the biz and set aside time to work on the business. We can all be faulted for not doing it as much as we should because this truly is where the fun is. Either all at once or over a week period, take a single day to do nothing but work ON the business. What a difference a day makes. Expect that people you hire to manage your business will be less capable than you. This doesn't mean you have to accept mediocrity, just not doing the job as well as you can. And in some cases, your help can do it better than you. This is the only way to grow and have the time to work on the business. Those who are able to grow their small businesses to much, much bigger ones accomplish this. |
