I have 2 salons and have basically been an absentee owner. I ran the salon only when an employee was sick or had an emergency. I show up at each salon every 2-3 days to make sure everything is running smoothly, refill inventories, drop off schedules, etc. Times are tough and I have decided to work the morning hours at one of my stores. My biggest fear is that when someone is sick at my other location, I won't be able to cover it. Has anyone ever closed their salon due to an employee illness or emergency? Did it hurt your business?

chester,I can understand where your coming from,My town has lost over 3000 jobs that last couple of months. You didnt say what hours your open per-day,But if your talking saving only 20 or so hours per week I would advise not doing it.
Its more important to be able to cover what ever comes up at either of the stores. And when employee's know there's not a chance of you showing up things will happen. With 2 or more stores its best the employee's not know when and if you might show up.

I agree with tanu01. It would be just my luck I the first day I worked the shift the other store would have some major catastrophie. Murphey's Law it never fails. Do you switch employees between stores? If it came down to it perhaps if someone was ill another employee from your other store could fill in?

why don't you hire some more employees??? I think you are cutting yourself way to short. There alot of people out there who are looking to work very little hours. I have an employee who only works 1 day a week and she is always on a call list.

When my daughter had her last baby we had to close, and all my customer did not have a problem with it. I said in a previous post, the reason you are a small business and most become business owners is for freedom. If you have to close, just post it and make up for it on another day, if they are loyal clients they will under stand.

Lori isn't COMPLETELY incorrect. I have MANY people lined up to work for basically NOTHING. House wives. They just wanna be somewhere that is not the house they live in. Get a hot mom in there that had tripplets and you can do no wrong.

I have 6 employees between both of my locations. Each works about 20 hours per week. One of them is quitting and I thought that I could save at least $600/month in payroll if I just worked the hours. At slow times like these, an extra $500 per month can go a long way. My employees are trained to work at each location so they can fill in for others when they are sick. However, many of my employees are college students or have other jobs so they can't just fill in at the drop of a hat. With only 6 employees, 4 of them are already scheduled to work sometime during the day. I could hire more employees and give everyone less hours but many of my high seniority employees would quit because I had to reduce their hours. Basically, I am trying to save money without ruining my business. Rarely, do I have people call in sick. So it would be a rare occurrence that I would have to close one store due to an illness at another store. Plus, we are only tanning 35 people per day so how many people can I upset. I was planning on doing this just through the slow season, because I would not want to be closed a day during the busy season. Then I would have all shifts covered by other employees and only sub when needed.

Do you have any rules set in place about calling in sick? We have a policy that is stressed very heavily during training: Once you are on the schedule, it is your responsibility to find a replacement. Exceptions can/are made in extreme cases, but it eliminates the "headache" and "have other things to do" call ins.
