When stepping into a new job, all employees are going to see how far they can push you and to see if you can handle them. The first thing to do is have a meeting and make sure you are all on the same sheet of muzic, to say if they have questions or you have rules. If there is handbook in the salon, review it and it some changes need to be made, ask the owner first. Discuss any issues from the past with the owner, so you will know what to expect. Folks have problems with power and sometimes we tend to go overboard. Employees will check you out just like you will then, but remember dont come in tryin to change things just to make them better. Normally its the boss who has a way of making things worse by trying to be pushy. Its just a tanning salon, not a major corp, I see to many times, people dont understand that. Its not like there is a ladder to climb, and I always you to say, you can be replaced just like the one before you. Everybody needs a paycheck, most dont want the job.

Agree with TanningEmporium~feel out who is willing to change for the better and who is not before making any decisions.
Set the ground rules as Grip suggested and let everyone know the changes that you feel are important.Tell them if they do not comply with new rules as set in employee handbook they will be written up. Then those who break the rules consistantly, write them up, have them sign it and keep. After 3 writeups your out, can't say I didn't warn you...and best of all you've got it in writing too. |

Start looking for a replacement staff now. You'll never rest easy with the one you have. Don't wait until it's too late either. Start doing the right thing right away! It takes much longer to rebuild a business than it does to tear one down.

Tell her that "conformity doesn't have to mean eliminating creativity". However, when being creative within a management style, you expect her to remember who you are, where you are and what you are.
Give her a list of management rules and then only manage the exceptions. The rules should manage themselves. I, too am concerned about her friends all working with her. What happens when a "friend" calls to cancel a shift because she wants to go party and play hookie from work? What will she do? The answer to this question is extremely important. |

That's my biggest concern. When you work for your friend, you expect them let you get by with a lot more then any other person would. If one of them doesn't come to work they will think "Oh, so and so will take care of it later" Well, one girl has already been two hours late for an opening shift and then didn't come in for another of her shifts. I let her go, unfortunately, they wanted to give her another shot. I feel that our busy season is coming with school starting back and I don't need to be running in to cover a shift just because she felt like going to happy hour. Thanks for all the input, it's definately helping me!

"I let her go, unfortunately, they wanted to give her another shot. " You have your answer from "they".
Hire a professional shopping service if there is one in your area, or you can train your own from a group of your friends and family or retired peace officers. We used them every month to shop our own stores and our competition. Outfitted with a secret camera and mike, "film at 11!". |

Do you see that evryone is giving you the same advice. Do you know why that is. Change is hard and these people will not change. Maybe in front of you but not behind you. Two examples. Took over the salon I am at now 4-5 years ago. Tried to bring in my crew from the previous salon. It was a further drive and they decided not to come with me. The new staff was stealing among other things. I told them I new but everyone had a clean slate. It was Febuary and I really had no choice. I at least cut the stealing down to probably $20-$30 a day. I estimate with money and lotions it was around 20 to 25 grand a year. Took me six months to weed them all out. Mean time my old crew was figuring out it wasnt to much fun to work for there new boss. As I filtered out the new crew I started bring in the old crew.
Cut them lose cut them all lose. Start thinking about next busy season now. Is this the crew you want to start with next year. Doesnt sound like it. I dont know how your pay scale is set up but mine largely depends on my crews sales. If you cant sell and you dont want to learn about lotion hit the road. You dont have learn about all the lotions just have them pick out a couple in each price range. |

NONE of my friends would EVER want to work for me. I'm too much of a **** to work for. |
