Im looking at opening a new salon early August. I have been working at a salon for only 6 months and have learned a lot of helpful things. Is there any advise you could give me?

Do LOTS of research. (And if it were me, I would hold off opening until late fall. August - November is a killer around my parts.) Good luck.

I agree with waiting to open. If I were opening on I would open in NOV or DEC. It will still be slow but you will have a little time before the season hits.

I think you just wanted to use "soft" and "hard" in a sentence.

You need lots of working capital....to hold you over if you open in August. I opened in July and it was a slow palpatating shock as I sat at my salon and wondered if anyone ever tans . Of course finally December rolled around and I started to have a normal heart beat. January came and it was great. But opening in August has it's positives as you can learn your computer software, timers, trying to work out the glitches if there are any. Training yourself & employees on how your salon will be managed & runned. Working on your price list. Get your inventory set up as to what lotions to order. There is alot to do & alot of marketing to do to get your name out. So this period can be helpful to prepare you to the busy period. Also, be careful in spending your dollars in different marketing medias. They will come to you! I've learned my lessons in this department and wished I didn't get "suckered" into thinking radio works (it's very costly), TV works (VERY costly). Word of Mouth, Signage, Join Chamber of Commerce, getting involved in local community advertising is what helped me the most. GOOD LUCK...there is alot more to running a tanning salon than one thinks. Be prepared to work your butt off 24/7 literally and don't expect the $$ to be rolling in

Adverting in "Neighborhood" news letters might be helpful in getting started. Usually very inexpensive.

X-Treme gives alot of good advice. We opened in June & were in the same boat! Do not pass up a good location just because you will open during the "slow season". Be prepared though......you will need cash to get you into the "busy season". We also found word of mouth & getting involved in the community is what ultimatly bought us our customers. Good luck!

No one said to pass up the location,Just dont open till Nov. Paying rent is one thing,Then you tack on everything else that being open brings that a whole other story.
