Just curious if you require your workers to tan. I only have a problem with one girl who is very white and likes to wear belly button revealing shirts. I think we are trying to reflect how wonderful our beds are but I don't think one pale girl is going to impact the business too much. I offer them lotion half price and unlimited tanning. I would like them to be able to give ideas the lotions and results they obtain. Well just curious if you guys make tanning optional or a requirement?

Tanning salon employees should love to tan. It is hard if not impossible to sell something you don't like. I would bet your very white employee is not your best sale person.

The thing is she the most responsible and very clean. Her customer service skills aren't as friendly as I would like. She is asking their name before the door can close behind them. She smiles and is friendly. I think having a tan even if it is just a base tan is essential during the busy season. Her sales are pretty good.

Why did you hire her??
Seems to me, if wearing a nice tan is what you wish from your employees, this should have been handled during the interview.

We tried the "Required to Tan" last season, and I had mixed feelings on it. If you have a sunless unit, then I think that you should go right ahead and require employees to use the facilities (their choice) at least once per week. Otherwise, I hate to 'require' someone to use the beds. (Not to mention the legal aspects.)

However, ALL of your employees SHOULD be tan! They are a walking advertisement for you! It is their job to sell tanning!

You have already said that her customer service skills are lacking, and that is a very important area. Your customers are your business! I would talk to her, discuss your concerns. Then, if it doesn't improve immediately, begin writing her up for dismissal.

Good luck!

Legal issues? What are these people doing in a tanning salon if they are not tan. Your employees are a reflection of your salon. You should be using every worker as marketing also. If you are paying someone $5/hr and they reflect a negative image (your machines tan like crap screams her white skin) you are losing money. A worker with a healthy glow and a big mouth can make you much more than you are paying them.

Me and my employees only tan once or twice a week. Sometimes even less. Someone who is a good seller is a good seller. Girls that I have had that are fanatics about tanning don't sell any better. We are getting a new spray tanner next month. Everyone will be encourged to use it at least once, but I know my employees - they will want to use it at least once to help sell it.

Although it has never been a problem in our salon, I think you can require at least a mimimal amount of tanning. It doesn't seem any different than requiring uniform shirts or mandatory training meetings. I usually only hire customers. They make great employees because they are already sold on your salon and are eager to tan free. I feel like if you don't wear it you can't sell it. Oh,BTW, one of the reasons we went to uniform shirts is because of girls having various body parts exposed.

Pam does bring up another great point - I would NEVER allow my girls to wear anything revealing a belly button. Even in the most laid back and relaxed salon, it still seem unprofessional to me.

Did I say wearing a nice tan is mandatory. No I am simply asking input on what others do. I would assume anyone who puts an application in plans on tanning. I would rather have a responsible and intelligent working than a brown bimbo. I totally agree with top 250 that a good seller is a good seller
