I think everyone should tan once in every kind of bed, even if it's just for a couple of minutes. That's the only way they can speak with any authority when a guest asks a question. Two minutes, that's all I ask...listen to the noise the fan makes, the normal squeek of the canopy, how it closes, etc...see exactly what needs to be cleaned when you get out--invariably they miss something...

You are what you sell! Hire employees who can and will tan. If you know how to gauge skin tone then hire someone you know that will tan. We're in the image industry, I agree with the diet pill from the 400 lb. salesman, it's a good analogy.

It is great to have employees who have a passion for the tanning industry (all aspects of it) and are happy to politely defend tanning should they need to while off the job. Knowing each piece of equipment and each type of lotion in our salon only comes from actually using them. How can anyone honestly sell something that they've never used? I encourage sampling all of our lotions at one time or another so that they will become familiar with and give honest opinions of their experience with the lotion or the equipment when someone asks. If I or my employees are not impressed with a particular lotion, it is hard to sell it. I don't require an employee to tan, but as stated in many posts, you pretty well know from an interview who has the passion and who just needs a job. I am lucky, all three of my girls love to tan. I read the article in the magazine mentioned above, and it is quite interesting.

Does a Chevy saleperson talk a customer into buying a Ford? It's no different. If a salesperson is pale, you're telegraphing tha a tan is not diserable. If an employee won't tan, look for someone else who is into it. A great looking tan is your best advertisement.
Most employess that have had an issue with tanning haven't told me until after training and they're on their own. |

by you having your employees having a tan, reflects on how your beds are. i worked at a tan spa once , european tan spa back in 1987 i think.....anyways the owner required us to tan every day, its jst when the super-bed came out, with the 160 watt bulbs but only 1 face tanner, and she ( my boss ) told me that if she notices im getting a little less tan she would throw me in that super bed for 45 minutes to an hour...........and she did! so a tanned employee is your business card.......and by having a non tan employee is a negative reflection of your spa..........why doesnt she like to tan? if shes afraid of burning or cant tan at all, then drench her with self tanning lotions, mystic tan, spray on tan.......whatever, the girl needs color. if i were to walk in a salon and there was a non tan person working i would have my coubts about the salon, my main reason being that the tanning beds arent all that great or the bulbs are too old etc.........its just not a good image for your business. im sure she is a hard worker but like i said , your workers being tan are like your business card, they show the clients that the beds work. i would give anything to work at a tan salon, for minimum wage just so i could tan for free every day, **** id even work for free just for the free tanning ( and i would be tanning only once a day, id tan B4 my shift, then after my shift...........the high pressure beds that only allow you to tan for 12 minutes just dont get me as dark as when i used to tan in a low pressure bed with phillips 100 watt / 32 body bulbs with one 400 watt face tanner.........id lay in that bed for an hour and i got so black it was so great, and now with tingle it would have looked more natural..........but i loved it!

I have to reply to TCN. You stated that the employees cannot tan during business hours at ANY time of year. Might I just give my oppinion in saying this is probably the main cause of your employees lack of enthusiasm towards being tan. I know that the salon I manage is open from 7am-11pm every day, and most of the employees tan right before they work 3-11 or right after they work from 7-3. I can almost gaurantee that if we told them they couldn't tan until after hours, none of them would be as tan as they are.
However there is a rule during busy season. They are not to tan during peak hours. They can either tan in the morning hours, or after 8pm. |
