For the people attending the trade shows, have you noticed that about 90% of the vendors are not tan? Even the spray booth cheerleaders didn't look that tan, they even covered up there legs with colored nylons. This really seemed strange to me, I'm sure our customers feel the same way about salon employees being white.

Joe Levy, was actually asked this question in one of the Smart tans classes, if tanning is that smart why are you so WHITE! Joe basically said, it was about his lifestyle, that he typically tans prior to vacations to avoid sunburning, and being a bronze God day to day was something he was not trying to achieve. I thought it was a pretty good response to that question.

Most the time girls not tanning enough is not a problem, but we have had a couple employees parents stop them from tanning as much as they may want to. This did create a situation when we got our high pressure bed. Because of the specific way you should use this type of bed. We called the parents of these employees and explained to them why we needed their daughters to tan more in our new bed, so they could experience what they were about to sell to our customers, they said yes.

in all three of our salons we do require employees to maintain color. not everyone gets a beautiful bronzed color from the beds so we also offer the airbrushing to those who prefer to get their color that way. we also allow our girls to use lotions free.

You know I do not believe that you have to be very tan. I myself as a owner I am tan, my manager is also tan but I have a girl that is pretty fair, but you know she kicks butt in all her duties. The clients love her, her sales are great and she is aperfect employee to promote our Mystic Tan. I beleve you either have it or you do not and during the interview process I think that you can see somewhat if they are able to sell by the way they sell themselves.

Bottom line, you are trying to sell tans right? Maybe she is not the right employee for your salon. Or if you have sunless tanning, she would be a prime candidate. No tan, no employee.

I am having the same problem with one of my girls. She is too lazy to tan. I finally told her at Christmas that she either start tanning or I have no choice but to let her go!! It is part of the job!! Not only that but she has no idea on any of the new lotions because she hasn't tried them. So now she is tanning with a new lotion each time and it is amzing how much more she knows about each lotion and how much better she looks with a tan!

Good move. Hire only tanning lovers. It is the best way to have a motivated salesperson.

I have many coming to the salon asking if I'm hiring. First thing I ask is if they tan or would like to tan. The ones that say "no" is usually one I won't consider. I hired a client who saw the difference in smart tanning and he's a great salesperson just speaking about his own testimony. It makes a difference who is behind the counter. I'm originally from Hawaii and when you have a client who comes in and say "I wish I could be tan like you"...I tell them...you can... we will get you there the smart way! Whoever you have working for you represents your salon and they should at least look the part and of course have charisma, enthusiasm & just great customer service...having your employee who is willing to tan and not look "pale" is definitely a plus!

All of my employees like to tan but sometimes they get lazy about coming in after hours to do it. Employees (including me, the owner) are not allowed to tan during business hours at any time of the year. When a couple weeks go by and I see the person starting to look pale I mention to them that they need to get tan again. I actually have it in my policy manual that it is part of the dress code along with their uniform and nametag. I don't care if it comes out of a bottle or from the tanning bed but it is just not good for the image we are marketing.

If any of my employees would ever say they do not want to tan I would question why they would want to work here. I think you need some amount of passion for what you are selling to be good at it and to enjoy your job.

We've had some bad blood on this issue in the past with a couple employees. I think they should tan. That's what we're selling. If an employee wants to sell "white and pale" then work someplace else. If they're that against it, why work in a tanning salon? Our tanning is free for employees so it's not a monetary issue. It's tough work getting down to the real reason at hand. If employees have a problem with tanning, they should divulge that information at interview when we tell them a tan is required. They never do. They just don't tan and make excuses. It's discouraging to invest all that time training and then have this issue come up.
