Let's just say Reno Police Department has had to be out here 5 times since we opened in May. If that gives you any idea as to how dramatic this place is! As far as the gossip goes...most of our clients are on a friend basis with us and keep coming back even though they know there's drama. They often ask how things are going, so of course, we chitchat for awhile, talk about what's new.... As far as bringing up the drama subject to clients, I don't participate in any of that!

How old are your employees who gossip, maybe this could be the problem? I don't know. I have been fortunate not to ever have this problem. But if I did catch them, it would be the normal routine: verbal warning, writing warning, "let go."

It really is a reflection of your management style. As a post indicated, young gals tend to naturally gossip. Your ability to install meaningfull training which gives motivation to mature one's character, will determine the atmosphere. Some people must be fired. These are the ones whom misrepresent themselves at interview time. Fire them based on that premise. The others need a reason to look forward, be it respect, opportunity, or development. If you don't provide a challenge, there's not much to do but stand around and gossip.

We don't put up with it. We had to make a clean sweep once becuase the old manager was gossiping right along with them. I came in set the rules and made sure every one knew that gossiping about friends, another business or co-workers would not be tolerated. So, after complaints from co-workers as well as clients THREE had to go. They didn't think the rules were set in stone, but now every one that works here does. I am not saying that they were examples for the cause, just that you can't let it happen with warning after warning!!!! We had an employee meeting and gave the 3 their warnings and told them they had 2 weeks to clean up their mouths and acts or leave. At the end of one week we had all we needed to let them go.
