Commissions are not giving anything away, but one of the ways to improve sales. We have 3 salons with 9 full time sale people, they make from a high of $12 per hr. to a low of $8, with from $2 to $6 of that coming from commissions and if it falls below $8 per hr. they will be looking for a new job. Our average full time employee have worked for us for a little over 5 years.

Hello Steve – I’m trying to get a handle on all of this. It sounds like you have two full time sales people per tanning center. What are your hours? Do the sales people also essentially run and maintain their center while on duty or do you have more employees? If so what do they do?
How do you calculate what a salesperson earns? Base plus commission? What’s the base ($6/hr?) and what kind of a commission plan do you offer? I know this is asking a lot but it’s important especially since it appears to work for you. Thanks. |

We are still on long hours 8am to 10pm Mon thru Thu, Fri thru Sun 8am to 9pm. Three full time sales people over 30 hours per week each salon and 3 part time bed cleaners per salon. We shorten hours and the bed cleaners are gone by Labor Day.
Each salon has a manager sales person who is responsible for most of the management of the salon. I'm responsible for payroll, banking, stocking retail and supplies and setting rules. My son or I do all the maintenance work like changing lamps and taking care of the computers. We pay base pay plus commission. Commission is on lotion only it's 10% on the first $1500 per month and 20% for anything over that. Steve Miller |

Hello Steve - When you go to ”short hours” what is the schedule? When do your "long hours" begin again? How abou holiday coverage? Got it, three full time sales people per salon, I was using very fuzzy math. Do your sales people have fixed hours? If so can you breakdown the shifts? What time slot does the manager/sales person cover?
When it comes to base pay one might imagine that the manager/sales person gets more. Could you spell this out or possibly PM me with this. Your commission structure is elegant. Your ability to retain sales staff is admirable. What benefits do you offer in addition to base pay and commission? Do you offer holiday pay, vacation pay, health insurance, other bonuses? Free tanning or lotions? Training? Anything else you’d attribute you’re success with the staff to? Thanks again. _________________ [ This Message was edited by: sunlists on 2003-08-14 09:59 ] |

Tanning is free for all staff, full or part-time although they must work a minimum of two shifts totalling no less than eight hours in that week to qualify. Not enough hours, employees pay full price. Free samples of lotions are available to staff because we believe they must try it to sell it. Lotions may also be purchased at 50% off, anything else on the shelves at 25% off. Monthly bonuses are given on all lotion sales (10% if sold at regular price, 5% if sold at a discount) and also on all unlimited tanning packages sold ($10 if sold at regular price, $5 if sold at a discount). Employees must be here 90 days before receiving any bonus and then it is paid on a monthly basis. Certain criteria must be met to receive a bonus.......percentages are deducted for infractions.......changing schedules, punching in late, improper attire, etc.

a&f (abercrombie & fitch for those who don't know, or cannot afford to buy $100 sliced t-shirts from them) has (had) an interesting employee plan. all employees work for minimum wage, and get 50% off their clothes from the store plus any toher discount. essentially most of their employees work to buy the clothes at the store. the american way.
another POPULAR mall-based store, awards discounts based on sales performance. on the other hand, i am of the schooling that if you give anything free to an employee, they will not see any value in it, and most likely will give it away to a (potential) customer. therefore, "no free rides" is my policy. I pay people fairly/hourly, 30% off retail (unless already on sale for 30% off or more - no combining discounts), and tanning is not free. Employees earn tanning awards based on their sales, per client average, and attitude. your mileage may vary. see dealer for details. |
