I have a new client who has now been in 3 times. She starts to feel ill about 10 minutes after she is done tanning. Nausious (spell check), weak. She has low blood pressure. Could tanning cause it to go even lower, making her feel this way? She is also on a RX drug for weight loss called Meridian, wondering if this too could be part of the reason. She thought perhaps she was getting to "dry" while tanning, but last night had 4 bottles of water prior to, this didn't help. Any comments?

Shantilly:
Maybe this will help you out a bit…… There are many possible causes of this condition, including: · medications, such as those used to treat high blood pressure. In this case, the medication may work too well and make the blood pressure too low. Many other medications, such as the sedative diazepam or amitriptyline, which is used to treat depression, can cause low blood pressure in some people. · heart conditions, such as abnormal heartbeats called arrhythmias or congestive heart failure. Cardiac tamponade, a condition in which fluid builds up around the heart and prevents it from pumping well, is another possible cause. · excessive blood loss · dehydration, which may be due to vomiting, diarrhea, or not getting enough fluids · a very serious blood infection known as sepsis · hypothermia, or an abnormally low body temperature · severe allergic reactions of any kind, often called anaphylaxis · low levels of oxygen in the blood, called hypoxia, which may be due to severe asthma, pneumonia, or other conditions · a hormone imbalance known as adrenal insufficiency, which can be caused by Addison's disease · high levels of acid in the blood, such as respiratory acidosis or metabolic acidosis · nervous system conditions. One example is diabetic neuropathy, or nerve damage caused by high glucose levels when diabetes is not well controlled. Serious head injuries or other nervous system damage may also cause low blood pressure. Other causes are also possible. In some cases, no cause can be found. Some people always have a blood pressure that is low compared to other people, but normal for them. They may not have any symptoms from their low blood pressure because it is normal for them. You said she is on Meridian..this is a diet pill…. She needs to be drinking a lot of water while on this… I sure wonder why in the world her doctor would allow her on this medication having low blood pressure……. But then that isn’t the question is it… Just a thought on my part here…..sorry… because low blood pressure can be effected by dehydration………. This medicine makes you very very thirsty…and acts as an oxygen blocker….. and a diuretic……. DESCRIPTION : Orthostatic hypotension is sudden low blood pressure that occurs when a person assumes a standing position. ( after she is in a resting position in the machines…she may be getting up too fast)….. It may be caused by hypovolemia (a decreased amount of blood in the body) resulting from the excessive use of diuretics, ( ummmmmmmmmmmm… Meridian….???) vasodilators, or other types of drugs, or prolonged bed rest. The disorder may be associated with Addison’s disease, atherosclerosis (build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries), diabetes, and certain neurological disorders including Shy-Drager syndrome and other dysautonomias. Symptoms, which generally occur after sudden standing, may include dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, and syncope (temporary loss of consciousness)… Please advise this guest to enter your units with caution……… Just my opinion………..but better safe than sorry… Truly, Chris |

hokey mokey chris! thanks for all that info. I'm just gonna print it and give it to her. But, would tanning make her blood pressure drop lower? I'm not sure if I found the answer in your info.

bronzebabe, as for your question. I have high blood pressure and am currently on 3 different pills a day to keep it under control (think being self-employed at times is the reason...haha) Anyway, my family doctor who has prescribed 2 of them, and my Internist who prescribed the 3rd pill, all know I own tanning salons. None of my meds make me sun sensitive. Tanning may help lower blood pressure --> proven fact.

Wow, thanks, Chris! Last summer I had a girl come out of our stand-up unit on the verge of passing out.She has a real problem with the heat, now I have something to go on for future reference.I myself have very low blood pressure, but thankfully haven't had any problems thus far with tanning(thank God!)My son is in mild congestive heart failure and he has tanned just a few times to develop a base at the beginning of summer.Again, no problems, but now you certainly have me thinking....Thanks for the info!
