FYI To Ask Don's Army:
Here are a few of the things that caught my eye in Nashville. 1. The new ECS system that promises to double your sunlamp life. The guys behind this new and inovative system "claim" that they can double the life of the sunlamps by virtue of keeping the lamps "on" continiously. They believe (and they are correct) that the "start up" is what causes sunlamps to fail. Will this concept catch on? First of all, they will have to prove to FDA that there is no "risk" to the employees cleaning the sunbed and/or to client when he/she comes into the room and then they will have to face the issue of whether the sunlamp companies will stand still for what is, in essence, a "recertification" of their products. 2. The shoulder tanning lamps in the ETS Escape 755. These 30w sunlamps are only about 6 inches high and appear to put out a lot of irradiance. If they do the job, it will be a real "coup" for Wolff System Technology and ETS. 3. Mori's "PocketSpec" device to measure the development of your client's tan. The marketers of this cute little device "claim" that it makes it possible to "quantitate" the development of Photo-Induced Protective Pigmentation (PIPP), which is better known as a tan, and if it works, it should be a winner. Some concerns I have is whether or not it will work for all skin types and whether or not it is "corrected" for the hemoglobin in blood. Mori said he will send me one to evaluate so I will let you know what I find out. 4. The "automatic shut off" feature of the TanAmerica line of high pressure equipment. If you looked closely, you would have noticed that the TA Matrix line (L-33 and V-28) all have a VERY important safety feature already built in that will, I believe, be made mandatory by FDA in the not too distant future. If an absorption filter breaks or shifts on the Matrix line, that lamp will be automatically be shut off. EVERY HID/hp unit should have this feature! Don, as with the human eye, the TanTone unit will be affected by the red of blood flow so the readings should be done PRIOR to the heat of a tan.
Don, If I'm correct on this one, the unit's readings will replace the present system of skin typing. If I'm correct, the tanning ability (the ability of a tanner to advance to either more time on the same bed or the same time on a stronger (UVB influenced) bed of a tanner increases as his protective melanin layer increases and/or darkens. This being the case, why should a skin type 2B be relegated to a certain bed when in fact the skin type 2B with a tan is as protected as a skin type 3B without a tan. This unit will indicate the level of darkness (protection except where the colour is from make-up... bronzers) and show a tanner where they are at any moment instead of relying on the basis of their untanned (unprotected) skin. As well, by keeping a record of the bed and exposure time used when the tanner was at a certain TanTone number, the tanner returning after an absence of months, not accepting a lower than last time bed, can be shown without a fight that his colour has actually faded and that a proposal that they tan in the bed and exposure time when he was last at his current TanTone number will prevent not only an argument.. but the burn that usually results when the salon owner loses the argument. Don, give me your address and I'll send you my loaner unit to test. |

Mori, is anyone working on developing a matrix to equate the TanTone number to the amount of time a client can tan? As you stated, the existing tan of an individual provides guidance to the Salon Operator on how long they can allow a client to tan. If there was a chart of numbers that offered suggested tanning times, it would greatly benefit the PocketSpec owner.
As you said, no more questionaires about skintype, just use the measurement number and equate it to a skintype. Based on that number, offer the proper session length to the client. NO more worry about the possibility of a burn. |

Yes, but it would be better if it indicated which filter shifted so that the problem can be quickly repaired. My Omegas have a safety switch in each cassette, but it doesn't tell you which one is the problem, so you have to take EACH cassette out to figure the problem. MAJOR pain in the butt!

If you take a continuity meter (every meter can do this) When you touch the leads together it "beeps"
You measure each bank. Omega has two? The one that does not beep is the culprit. Test each glass at that point to pinpoint the problem. Five minute job. Mori, What happens to the client if the glass did not "shift" but somehow shattered? |
