FYI To Ask Don's Army:
If you are looking for a good laugh, there is a paragraph in the latest "Smart Tan Tune-Ups" (Volume 3, Number 10) that you should read. "On the other hand, a person should probably wait a few hours if showering after tanning because it takes a while for the skin to process the light it has received into a tan. Taking a shower right after tanning won't eliminate the tan altogether, but it will minimize the total impact of the individual session.' Duh! Are they kidding us? I hereby challenge Smart Tan to provide a scientific reference to substantiate the "myth" that they have disseminated. Failing that (and they won't be able to), I suggest that Smart Tan correct this false, deceptive, misleading and scientifically unsubstantiated statement. First of all, the "reaction" of the body to UVR is instantaneous; it happens in milli-seconds and so the Smart Tan statement that "it takes a while for the skin to process the light it has received" must also be considered false, deceptive, misleading and scientifically unsubstantiated. Next, while there are several studies showing that taking a warm shower BEFORE tanning will enhance the tanning process, there are absolutely no papers that I am aware of showing that showering afterward will "minimize the total impact of the individual session" as stated by Smart Tan. Are they saying or implying that a UVR-induced tan will wash off? Are they mixing up the spray tan (cosmetic skin staining) with Photo-Induced Protection Pigmentation (c)? Or are they just "pulling our leg" so that we can all have a good laugh? Don "Who Laughed So Hard His Sides Hurt" Smith |

________________________________________ ______________ it takes a while for the skin to process the light it has received into a tan. ________________________________________ ______________ They might be thinking of the 12-24 hours for erythema to show up (assuming a slight sunburn was caused), or the several days for melanin to oxidize and appear as "more tan". In either event, the UVR effect on the skin has already occured... and is busy under the surface doing it's thing: shower or no shower! The only bit of truth there might be: moisturized skin (from lotions) would be dried out after shower, unless more goo was applied. Then the tan might not "come out" as good later on? |

Could it be that they are referring to using bronzing lotions? From my experience, I find that if I don't shower for a while after using these types of lotions it gives them a chance to sink into the skin a little more.... Or am I under an illusion?

Just a little info here.
My clients insist that if they go quickly home into a VERY WARM bath, they actually received better results. I have always attributed this to, heating the skin increasing the blood flow as well as water actually is oxidizing and speeds up that process. Shari |

I believe Solarmeter is on the right track on this one. The bathing process removes the tanning lotion from the skin and reduces its effectiveness in protecting your skin (keeping it moist after the tan.) Its also postulated that the water on the skin has a negative effect on the oxygenization of the skin thereby reducing the overall effectiveness of the tanning session. Evidence to support this is not forthcoming. I believe this was a topic of discussion at one of the Nashville Seminars in the past. I know Smart Tan has held to this idea for some time now. We suggest that our clients not remove their lotion for 1-2 hours after the tanning session, just to maximize its skin protection capability.

Ree:
My problem with Smart Tan making a stupid statement like this is because we have enough anti-tanning "myths" to contend with without more like this. Statements like this are counterproductive! Don |
