The words "For truth there is no deadline" by Heywood Broun are apropos to some VERY IMPORTANT information I received from Michael Stepp, President of Wolff Systems Technology.

Eventually, as you will find out, even anti-tanning dermatologists feel obligated to "tell the truth" about the relationship between sunbed use and melanoma.

Title: "Sunbed use and risk of melanoma: results from a large multicerntric European study.

Authors: Autier, De Vries, Eggermont, Coebergh, Ringborg, Bandberg, Bataille and Grivegnee.

Location: Luxembourg Health Institute, Luxembourg, The Netherlands

[Note: I will post the entire summary and highlight (capitalize) the important points.]

"The study objective was to assess whether there is an association between sunbed use and cutameous melanoma in subjects 18-49 years old. In a case-control design, we compared past sunbed and sun exposure of 622 incident melanoma cases, to the exposure experienced by 649 controls recruited in six European countries, from April, 2000 until June, 2002. Levels of sunbed used were higher than in any fomer study on the same toipic. HOWEVER, NO EVIDENCE WAS FOUND FOR AN ASSOCIATION BETWEEN SUNBED USE AND MELANOMA. No result suggested a dose-response curve, and and no association was even present for subjects reporting more than 35 hour of cumulated sunbed use and/or who started their sunbed use AT LEAST 19 YEARS before the interview. OUR STUDY DOES NOT SUPPORT THE POSSIBILITY THAT SUNBED USE COULD INCREASE THE MELANOMA RISK."

Since Autier, et al, have published several articles showing a link between sunlight exposure and an increased risk of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), these findings, taken together, substantiate my premise that it is wavelengths OTHER THAN UVR that induce CMM! As you know, I believe that it is the Mid-IR (Infrared) wavelengths (3,000 nm - 10,000 nm) that induce CMM.

There really is no deadline for the truth!

And there is absolutely no "link" between the use of sunbeds and an increased risk of cutaneous malignant melanoma. [Note: I'm saving the "scientific reason" why (1) sunbeds are not linked to CMM, and, (2) a "tan" protects against CMM FOR MY TALK IN NASHVILLE.
