Good Sunday Morning Everyone,
I would like you to read what I have just read in my daughters science magazine. I will personally be discussing this statement with the editor...I would ask that you review what is printed below and take action if you feel it's something worth addressing. Many Thanks! Taken from KIDS Discover Magazine latest edition: SUN October 2002 Picture shows 30 little children in swimwear and patches over their eyes standing in a circle around a uv emitting device. Caption reads... Too little sunlight can be bad for your health. In far northern countries, winter days are short and depression can set in. To combat it, some people get artificial sunlight. Too much sun can be hamful as well. Deadly skin cancer rates have skyrocketed in the last 30 years as more people sunbathe and go to tanning salons. You can reach the editor @ editor@kidsdiscover.com I would encourage everyone to e-mail and give your views on this. Have a Great Day! Shari Jones |

Here's what I sent them as a start:
Please update your knowledge base on the subject of ultraviolet and health. The "depression" you refer to has little or no relationship to solar or artificial UV... it is primarily about full-spectrum visible light. Recommending staying out of UV light is fast becomming outdated and the WRONG message. Avoiding sunburn (overdose or erythemal dose) remains the CORRECT message... but the positive benefits of UV can far outweigh the manageable risks. Please read these two threads on the Weather Channel Ray's awareness board. Start at the end and work backwards to keep in context. http://messageboards.weather.com/3/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=253291764&f=7912936431 &m=8712957706 http://messageboards.weather.com/3/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=253291764&f=7912936431 &m=4192940306 Thankyou in advance for beginning your understanding of some of the issues surrounding this subject. Shari/All:
Go to the "Ask Don's Army E-Message Campaign" section and add your protest to the editor of KIDS Discover Magazine to mine. All you have to do is click on the link below and add your comments, your name, salon name, phone number and e-mail address and send it to the magazine. It will only take you a few seconds so there is no reason for not doing so. Let's see if we can get AT LEAST 100 people protesting the false, deceptive, misleading and scientifically unsubstantiated (FDMSU( statements made in the article. http://www.tantalk.com/forum/auto_email.php?mode=send&id=17 Don [ This Message was edited by: Don Smith on 2002-09-29 11:40 ] |
