We had to put our wonderful Shih Tsu "Samantha" to sleep this morning. Her loving heart was still strong but her kidneys and liver failed her.
The last two nights when Pat and I took turns holding her trying to give her comfort, it seemed like she was trying as best she could to cheer us up instead of the other way around. No matter whether the day had gone right or wrong or whether my life was up, down or inside out, Sammie was always there for me during the last 15 years. She had the power to cheer me up when I came home even if I didn't want to be cheered up! It was impossible to stay sad when she worked her wonderful and loving magic. When Pat came into our lives I believe that she first fell in love with Samantha and realized that she had to take me to get her. Thank you Samantha! The following sums up my feelings for Sammie dog. "The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. He/she will kiss the hand that has no food to offer and when all other friends desert you, he/she remains." [George Vest] Needless to say, Pat and I are devastated that we lost our friend and companion today. Don |

Don,
You have my deepest sympathies. I know completely how you feel having gone through the same pain two years ago. I don't think I've ever felt such complete sadness in my life. Take the time and remember the happiness she brought to your lives. I'd like to share a poem that the veternarian's assistant gave to my family the day we lost our friend. I keep it on my desk. Quote:THE TIME HAS COME... If it should be that I grow frail and weak, And pain should keep me from my sleep, Then will you do what must be done For this - the last battle - can't be won. You will be sad, I understand, But don't let grief then stay your hand, For on this day, more than the rest, Your love and friendship, must stand the test. We have had so many happy years, You would not want me to suffer so. When the time comes, please, let me go. Take me to where to my needs they'll tend, Only, stay with me till the end. And hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time you will agree It i a kindness you do to me. Although my tail it's last has waved, From pain and suffering I have been saved. Don't grieve that it must be you Who has to decide this thing to do; We've been so close - we two - these years, Don't let your heart hold any tears. (author unknown) |

Don and Pat,
Drew and I both send our condolences to you. We lost our Golden Retriever last year to cancer. He was 'our' baby we got shortly after we first got together. Losing Jake was like losing part of ourselves. Sammie will always be in your hearts. Keep the memories close. We're truly sorry for your loss. ;( |

Don and Pat,
We have a Maltese that is 9 years old and we found out yesterday she has a heart mumor. They started her on medication today. Our little Nickie brings joy to our lives so I can feel your pain and hurt. Don I know it is a sad time for you and Pat. Try and remember the happy times and hold the memories close. _________________ Frankie Burrell Silver Sun Tan USA "Together We Can Make A Difference"[ This Message was edited by: Frankie on 2002-09-07 20:04 ] |

Don and Pat,
For right now, all I can say is I am Sorry for your loss. I still cry when I look at Champ, knowing what I saw. He is still alive and only 9 months old. But I have been in your shoes. It is very hard. I care and understand. Mitzi |

Don,
My sympathies to you too. Seems there are alot of caring and compasionate people here that feel your pain. We have a 13 year old Dalmation that is showing her signs of age....blind in one eye, and her hips are starting to fail her....even though I don't want to admit it I know her day is soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of greif. |
