FYI To Ask Don's Army:
An article in the current New England Journal of Medicine showed that women who walked "briskly" for two to three hours each week had a 30% lower risk of heart-related problems such as heart attack, stroke, the need for heart bypass surgery, heart failure or death. The question is, was this "benefit" conveyed by the physical exercise involved with walking or the production of vitamin D while walking or a combination of the two? The landmark study in Australia by Stagg, et al, showed a similar (33%) reduction in CHD (coronary heart disease) in individuals who maintained optimal levels of vitamin D. Thus, one can reasonably presume that vitamin D is the most important factor for the risk reduction in the NEJM study. Don "Who Says That Vitamin D Is VERY Important" Smith |
