FYI To Ask Don's Army:
[Note: Please read "Stay With Me...#1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 before reading this post.] Let's review Lesson 1. I said that our PROTECTIVE PIGMENTATION (constitutive and facultative) protects us 4 ways. 1. Photo-protection. Facultative pigmentation (a "tan") protects the skin from being sunburned. 2. Thermo-protection. Facultative pigmentation (a "tan") acts as a "chromophore" and, because it absorbs heat producing infrared wavelengths, helps the body dissipate the heat into the air and thereby keep the body temperature regulated. 3. Immuno-protection. Facultative pigmentation (a "tan") helps protect you two ways. First of all, it protects you from environmental "insults" by "sheilding" the skin's immune defense system from the immuno-suppressive wavelengths and, secondly, by allowing the immuno-stimulatory wavelengths to pass through. 4. Enhancing Repair Capacity. Facultative pigmentation (a "tan") works in ways not completely understood to "enhance" our normal and natural "cellular repair" mechanism. Thus, the "business" of indoor tanning salons (protective pigmentation parlors?) is to help clients develop PROTECTIVE PIGMENTATION without overexposure. Therefore, tanning salons offering "traditional" UVR delivering sunbeds and booths should, henceforth, be called PROTECTIVE PIGMENTATION PROVIDERS (PPP). Tanning salons offering "spray technology" should, henceforth, be called COSMETIC SKIN COLORING PROVIDERS (CSCP). [Note: I am aware that a given facility may offer both PPP and CSCP.] The "bottom line" is that, instead of fighting an expensive losing battle to change the "image" of the word "tanning" in the mind of a large segment of the American public, we will simply, correctly and PRO-ACTIVELY present ourselves as PROTECTIVE PIGMENTATION PROVIDERS. [Note: Steve raised the point that perhaps FDA/FTC might consider the words "Protective Pigmentation" as making a medical claim but I don't think that they will (or can). Why? Because FDA knows (even if FTC doesn't) that there is an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence showing the "protective" properties of constitutive and facultative pigmentation and to force us to continue using the word "cosmetic" would force us to lie to the American public. In addition, FDA is aware of the "confusion" in the mind of the public about "traditional" and "spray" technology since the advent of spray tanning. Anyone getting excited about a NAC promoting PROTECTIVE PIGMENTATION besides me? Don "Excited About The Future" Smith _________________ [ This Message was edited by: Don Smith on 2002-09-07 15:56 ] |

Don,
I'm excited, and I would think every salon owner would welcome the proactive promotion of being a Protective Pigmentation Provider. I suppose VDP would be going too far?
Vitamin D Provider. Hmmm.. not a good acrynom - somebody would surely refer to "VD" as something not so nice, and blame the bed cleaner. PPP - Pleasant Photon Provider. |

Don,
Very Exciting to say the least. I can't believe I didn't think of it first! LoLoLoLoL! Matter of fact, why didn't anyone else think of it? I guess sometimes things are simple yet profound! Keep It Up! Shari |
