Yesterday I was inches away from stopping a clients bed. As we all know, we are not offering babysitting services, we are tanning clients. The child in question was 9 and "sampled" every Tester bottle we have in the salon while her mother tanned. I told her to please stop and sit down until her mother returned. When she started handling the crystals, again I told her to please stop and return to her seat. Once more... playing with the water cooler, this time the owner caught her playing with the scalding HOT water! Told her to stop and sit down until her mother was done. I admit it went on far too long and by the time the owner said something, the woman's bed had clicked off and she was dressing.
However, I did inform her very politely EXACTLY what happened. I did not apologize, but simply stated what occurred and that not did I tell her to stop and sit down, but the owner did as well. The woman apologized and said she would be back (made an appointment) without her daughter. Even though I probably should have stopped the bed sooner, I'm glad I didn't... she is still a client and will still be tanning with us, without bringing kids. |

Yeah, I have been so tempted to turn the bed off. What really bugs me is that the mothers that obey the rules of not leaving children unattended are the ones that have good kids and will sit and wait quietly. The ones that are hellions, are the moms that don't care what your rules are.
I have lost a client or two over their children. Glad this one worked out for you. |

We also have signs up that children should not be left unattended. Some children are wonderful, they just sit and read a book or play a little vidoe game. But on the other hand some run to the restroom 5 times, play with every display, put hand and face prints on every window. I have no problem telling the parent in a very nice manner that they will have to find alternate childcare when they come to tan because their child was interupting normal business. I have done it quite a few times and never had a parent get mad at me......a few have gotten mad at their child, but all have come back, childless.

For every ten kids who behave wonderfully, there is only one who won't. AS a majority you never see children in our salon. Another rule of thumb for us is, good customer relations doesn't come from a sign. I'd rather have a personal relationship with my clients instead of posting signs they will only ignore. It doesn't happen often, but when it does... it's a dooozy!!
One gal who was a daily tanner (unlimited, never bought lotion) decided since her kids wouldn't behave in the salon... she'd bring them but make them stay in the car. Of course they were running all over the parking lot, chasing one another and locking each other out of the car. I stepped out of the salon and yelled (and I mean YELLED) at them to get in the car, put on their seat belts and wait for their mother. I also told them I would tell their mother what they were doing. Again, I didn't need to stop her bed, she was dressing. I told her what happened and she never brought them back again. |

I will often bring my kids with me to the salon, especially now while it is slower. We kept this in mind when building the salon and have an area designated especially for them. I don't regret this, what I do regret is building that area in the front where every one can see it. They do not understand that this "play area" is for MY chilren, not theirs.
I like Tamars advice that I have read here before..."Free kitten for each unattended child" It is funny and light hearted, but gets the point across. |

We have a sign posted as well that children should not be left unattended. However, just like yours salons they do anyway. If a customer makes the decision to do so our clerks "politely" and "professionally" let them know that if a child becomes disruptive we will turn off the parents unit and they will forfeit their visit for the day. IF the parent is punished the child either behaves on the next visit or they don't return.
We honestly do not have alot of problems any longer! We had one lady to leave her child who would roam outdoors and all of our salons are in medium to large shopping malls. We can not be responsible for someone kidnapping a child nor do we want that to happen so the clerks would have to stop waiting on our customers to tend to the child. This is the reason for stopping the units. So far, no parent has been offended and the only ones that are left in the lobby areas are well behaved. _________________ [ This Message was edited by: Tracie Williams on 2002-09-09 12:39 ] |
