FYI To Ask Don's Army:
Remember the Atilisoy study? You know, the one that the AAD (American Academy of Dermatolgy) used as their "bashing" theme a few years ago that involved grafting human foreskins on MICE and then irradiating them with FS series sunlamps with high UVB. And what is the basis for the IEC/CIE (and FDA) proposal for using the NMSCAS (Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Action Spectrum)? You guessed it, studies done a decade ago on MICE using FS series high UVB sunlamps! [Note: As I CLEARLY stated at the February 7 & 8, 2002 FDA meeting, the NMSCAS is a "political" attempt by a small group of anti-tanning international regulators to damage our industry. It IS NOT science; it IS NOT even pseudoscience; rather, it is based on JUNK SCIENCE using laboratory MICE that uses a ridiculous "conversion factor" that "magically" converts data on MICE into human data.] In fact, most of the studies used by the anti-tanning segment of the dermatology community against us these past few years have been based upon studies using laboratory MICE. NOW THE TRUTH COMES OUT! In a VERY interesting article (click on the link below to read it) on CNN.com titled "Study: Caffeine lowers skin cancer risk in mice" there was a quote by Darrell Reigel, M.D., a professor of dermatology at New York University and "an expert spokesman for the American Academy of Dermatology" and here is what he said. "There is really no good animal model for skin cancer. The hairless mouse is the best of a bunch of bad choices." He went on to say that "A lot of things that work in mice cannot be extrapolated to humans." As you know, I have been saying the same thing for the past 3 years AND NOW a spokesman for the AAD is admitting the truth! So, a question. Why have they (anti-tanning dermatologists) used "bogus" studies using laboratory MICE against us for the past decade if THEY KNEW that these studies were not credible? Use the "Printer Friendly" option and print out this study and give it out to anyone (including your local media) who tries to use a study using MICE against us. http://www.cnn.com/2002/HEALTH/08/26/caffeine.cancer.ap/index.html Regarding the central premise of the study - that the topical application of caffeine lowers the skin cancer risk in MICE - one would hope that lotion companies will take a HARD look at this possibility. FYI, in case you are wondering WHY THE TRUTH COMES OUT NOW, the derms are publicly admitting that studies using MICE are bogus because they want to downplay the value of using caffeine to reduce the effects of OVEREXPOSURE (the MICE were exposed to "brutal levels of ultraviolet radiation") because they know that, if proven to reduce the damage caused by OVEREXPOSURE, the use of a caffeine "spray" after a session in a tanning bed (involving sensible, moderate and responsible EXPOSURE to UVR) would obviate their primary argument against indoor tanning (and outdoor tanning)!
