FYI To Ask Don's Army:
Do you want to live a long and healthy life? Do you want to be able to eat anything you want to without worrying about developing coronary heart disease? Do you want to be able to enjoy sensible, moderate and responsible exposure to UVR without worrying about skin cancer? If your answer to the above is "yes" all you have to do TODAY is...... CHOOSE YOUR ANCESTORS WISELY! That's the conclusion of two recently published studies showing that your genetic makeup is the primary factor that determines how you will react to environmental factors. For instance, although women are told to take lots of calcium supplements in order to avoid osteoporosis, the gene for the vitamin D receptor has numerous "segments" (called alleles), some of which do not respond well to increased calcium. [Note: Once again, naturally produced vitamin D is best!] Some people can eat steak and eggs until the cows come home and never have an increase in their cholesterol level or suffer a heart attack and another eating the same diet has high cholesterol levels and suffers an early MI (myocardial infarct or heart attack). A gene called Apo E (for Appoprotein E) has three common varieties and people with the Apo E4 gene is at higher risk. [Note: Apo E2 and Apo E3 are the "good" genes.] The "good news" is that there is both "nurture" (genetics) and "nature" (environment) entering into the equation. Therefore, a person with the Apo E4 gene can eat a heart-healthy diet with fewer than 30 percent of calories from fat and fewer than 300 milligrams of cholesterol a day and have virtually no increased risk of suffering a MI despite having the "bad" gene segment. And that "good news" applies to people who have a higher risk of skin cancer too. Everyone except skin type 1 individuals can choose to maintain a year-round tan (that has the same "protective" effect as eating a healthy diet) in order to avoid the increased risk that intermittent sunburning poses. Skin type 1's, who were put here on earth by Mother Nature to show us how lucky we are to be able to tan, have no alternative but to practice sun avoidance and to use sunscreens. Everyone else has the ability to supplement the photo-protection, thermo-protection and immuno-protection provided by their natural skin color (constitutive pigmenation) by acquiring a tan (facultative pigmentation). The data in the HGP (human genome project) will, when analyzed and understood, revolutionize our lives (and especially the lives of our children!). We will be able to determine our RR (relative risks) to the leading causes of death and take steps to protect ourselves against them. That's why I said "TODAY" above. In the near future "genetic engineering" will become a reality and we will be able to replace "disease susceptible" genes (and gene segments) with "healthy genes" and dramatically increase our productive life span. However, in the meantime the best thing is to choose your parents wisely! LOL Don "Who Has Good Longevity Genes Because He Picked His Parents Wisely" Smith |
