FDMSU = False, Deceptive, Misleading and Scientifically Unsubstantiated.

On page 36 of the Health Canada "Guidelines for Tanning Salon Owners, Operators and Users" (the "guidelines"), Section 5, a false, deceptive, misleading and scientifically unsubstantiated (FDMSU) statement was made that must be corrected.

The statement:

5. FPTRPC recommends that particular attention be given to the reduction of UVR exposure among the following groups:

a. CHILDREN. As much as 80% of the lifetime UVR exposure takes place before the age of 18 years.

Since Health Canada personnel know, or ought to know, that a paper presented at the recent American Society of Photobiology meeting in Quebec City, Canada by Godar, Urbach, Gasparro and van der Leun titled "Childhood UV Doses: Reality versus Myth" stated that "...analysis of actual exposure data shows that people get less than 25% of their lifetime dose by the age of 18" it is clear that the statement made by Health Canada on page 36 of the "guidelines" is FDMSU and, therefore must be changed.

[Note: Click on the "Viewable Link" below and you will be able to view and print out an article documenting the fact that the Health Canada statement is FDMSU (false, deceptive, misleading and scientifically unsubstantiated).]

Point (b) of Section 5 states that "SENSITIVE PEOPLE: People with lightly pigmented skin, hair and eyes are at higher risk of developing skin cancer. While this statement reflecting the influence of a persons genetic makeup in the induction of skin cancer is correct, the statement "SENSITIVE PEOPLE" should be changed to "UVR SENSITIVE PEOPLE" in order to be correct.

This information will be included in my response to Health Canada.

Don

Ha-ha.. my ex wife is a very "sensitive person" but as a type 3 she is not very "UV sensitive" at all. Two completely different things for sure.
