Sorry Don,
Been a little busy with the final construction on our new salon. I did send off a letter this morning.

Better late than never in Ohio...

First of all, let me congratulate the 30 individuals who sent the pre-formatted e-mail message to Tim Franklin, vice president and editor of the Orlando Sentinel protesting the articles written by Stephanie Erickson. They showed that (1) they care about the indoor tanning industry, and, (2) they support their peers in Orlando and the State of Florida.

But there is a problem that makes me wonder if there REALLY is such a thing as "Ask Don's Army" or if that is just another pipe-dream of mine (like believing that "working together, we can make a difference").

Here are the statistics:

1. 30 people took the time to "stand and deliver" a message of protest to the Orlando Sentinel!

2. 267 people read this thread (at the time of this writing).

3. 85 read my letter of protest to the Orlando Sentinel.

So, some questions:

1. Why have only 30 people sent a response? After all, the e-mail message is "pre-formatted" and all that you have to do is click on the link below, highlight the message to "tfranklin@orlandosentinel.com, add a few "comments" if you choose to and give your name, salon name and e-mail address and hit the "send" button. It takes all of 30 seconds!

http://www.tantalk.com/forum/auto_email.php

2. Don't tanning salon owners care about supporting their peers? Is the problem only important when it is in THEIR backyard?

3. Is everyone afraid to "get involved" in these important issues?

4. Doesn't anyone know (or care) that a stalwart band of a few hundred people REALLY CAN change things?

My analysis is that there is one word that describes majority of the "rank and file" tanning salon owners.

APATHETIC!

Ask Don IS NOT happy. I am furious! I am disgusted with you Slackers! And, most of all, I am sad.

Why should I hours to to prepare these e-messages if YOU (yes you, Slacker!) aren't willing to spend a few minutes helping out?

Why am I wasting my time formulating plans that requires support from tanning salon owner "community" when it is becomming perfectly clear that it doesn't exist?

Doesn't anyone care?

Don "Disgusted and Unhappy" Smith

Don,
I think one of the key points you hit upon was "afraid" to get involved. I know that we have lots of new and inexperienced salon owners frequenting this site and I think that the stress of day to day operations, getting clients in the doors are taking presedence over the bigger picture. But salon owners need to stop and realize that all of our futures depend on getting involved in what Don & Don's army is trying to do.

I admit I myself was "afraid" to get invovled. I felt that I didn't have the clout within the industry as the posters that I see in Don's forums. But I realized that these people will be able to help me. So I should help them anyway I can.

So my hopes in posting this is that owners who are viewing this and think it's over your heads, it's not. I'm one of the ordinary and I'm doing what I can to make a difference, YOU SHOULD TOO.

Really...why is it so hard? Just press send, you don't even have to adda your own comment if you don't want to. If you are reluctant to do so then please either post or PM a mod explainin why. This way we can understand and address your questions or concerns.

Just so that everyone including Don knows; I sent mine long ago. In fact, I beleive I was the first one who sent it from here. So while I will admit that I have been a slacker in the past and probably will again in the future...I cannot be called a slacker at this point in time. Thank you
