I have an employee who sells a ton of lotion and whenever I am around is as nice as pie. But some of the other employees complain about her being snobby or short with them. She is 19 and I can see this side to her but she is very careful around me. How do you address this issue to her. "The other employees state that you are short and can be snobby" She is not very patient and thinks she is always right. The I have another employee who would like to be in charge. I wish I could have them all the same...friendly and do as I say! LOL Just venting....

My advice is not to reveal your source of information. A way to handle the situation is to let her know "It has come to my attention... blah blah blah". That way you are not causing undue strife between coworkers. I would definately have a talk with her. Nip this in the bud. I would also tell her that you expect her to treat everyone the same... you, clients and her coworkers. Spell it out clearly exactly what you expect and then let her know you will be following up. Then follow up. If her behavior changes, tell her there has been improvement. If not... then there is the door.

I agree Laurie, you cannot let one employee know that their coworkers are "snitching". I would tell her there was a complaint (or two or three, depending on how deep her denial is) and tell her you're all ears if she has a problem that needs to addressed. "The complaint really surprised me, because you've always been nice around me" let's her know that you don't have to BE there to be watching and listening.

I would tell the employee that is complaining, ok - next time you see this happening, address it specifically with her.
Ask her what's up? or why does she have this kind of attitude? So that the two of them can communicate first before you get involved to resolve any problems that they may have with each other. This way you can find out if the one complaining really has a gripe, and why should you, as the owner, get involved unless this is truly an issue. I believe we should teach these kids to stand up for themselves and figure it out among themselves, because there WILL be hard feelings if YOU get involved now. Someone will know someone is talking about them behind there backs.

Follow Laurie and Tamar's advice. Do it discreetly.

If she is rude and snotty to co-workers it may be the clients next if not already! Also consider jealousy between the employees.

Thanks I do see some jealousy with the staff. She (the problem) mainly works nights and the other girl is older and works days. They all want that shift. I only hired the new girl for days part time. You know Las Vegas is sounding really good right now. I wasn't planning on going but with all the stress at work I need a break! What weekend is it by the way? I am going to have a talk with her tomorrow and I am sending in some secret shoppers also to see how she reacts to clients..I will keep ya posted.
