Rep Power: 8 Bronze Star will become famous soon enough
Where do you discuss issues with your staff? Do you pull them aside EVERY time to make sure that they are made to feel comfortable? I'm wondering if there aren't times when there isn't enough time to make something private where you have to just deal with a situation right then and there, regardless if there are other employees or clients present. I mean, we're adults... right? As long as it's still done in a respectful manner, an owner or manager should be able to deal with a situation or at least express displeasure, take corrective action, whatever if there isn't time to be more private. We should be able to handle a little constructive criticism in front of others without acting like someone just took our favorite toy. Aren't there times when we should just "suck it up and deal"? People need to be accountable for their actions or lack there of. Again... if there is no time and no one is disrespected. I'm not talking about screaming and name calling. I'm talking about someone who is calm and objective, dealing with a situation immediately. After all, your staff wouldn't hesitate to tell you the toilet exploded or that bed 4 is broken in front of clients... right?

What do you think?

I normally try to do everything in private. But, Bronze you are right, sometimes the issue needs to be dealt with immediately.

If you have to do it publically, at least be polite about it. You don't have to berate the employee in front of a lobby full of people. I've found that lowering my voice to a barely audible level gets their attention. Then I ask how they think the situation could have been handled differently. They realize that they did something wrong and it gives them the opportunity to either explain their actions or explain how the situation should be handled next time.
