When you're training a new hire, do you have him or her take the time during shifts to try out different beds and lotions? Waste of time and money? NO WAY!!

I did this with clothes, it works the same way with tanning. If you make a person try on all 10 different styles of jeans, then they will be able to speak more confidently about them because they will have more knowledge. There are some things you just can't get from reading a manual. Every time we got new merchandise in, I allowed employees 20 minutes to try on different outfits and it was amazing how well they sold when they had FIRST-HAND KNOWLEDGE of the items.

The same thing can apply with beds or lotions. If they have tried everything you sell, then they will be able to say "When I used this one, I saw awesome results." or "I have skin like yours and I didn't like the way it felt on my face." Maybe "this bed can get very hot in the facial area, but there is a button you can hit to turn the face tanners off. I usually have to turn them off after 8 minutes."

It may seem like a waste of time or whatever, but it truly is an investment. Is this part of YOUR training plan?

Yes, this is good. I have a box of lotions under the counter that are free for my employees to use. All the beds are free to use. So they do get to "Try It On".

Trying different lotions and tanning in the super beds are job requirements. They know the base beds from being customers, so now they are delightfully spoiled enough to sell upgrades.

We are REQUIRED to USE the equipment and lotions in the salon. I also get my nails done there, which is a fantastic advertisement for their nail services which are located all the way to the back of the salon. The questions I hear most are "Which is your favorite bed?" "What lotion do you use?" "Where do you get your nails done." It is not an option for us to be ignorant... it simply is laid out from the very start that we must have hands knowledge of all equipment, products and services the salon provides.
