Scam, spam. This is a great argument to urge the public to tan at a professional, certified salon and to outlaw home tanning units. We should never let this thread die, or at the least, until the first national ad is put together and presented. Take the bullets and fire them back.

I saw this on my local news station as well. The wife did not looked burnt. She may have been a little pink, but NOT severly burnt. Husband was golden brown.
For pete's sake, 3 hours in a tanning unit! This girl would have been red as a cherry, tomatoe, or strawberry. You pick. I thought they said it was a Sunquest bed, but I may be confused with the girl that called me wanting to sell her almost new Sunquest. hardeharhar... Let's get NAC goin and make our own news talk show! Myths of tanning and Facts of tanning. ps. I have had 3 clients come in today asking me about this story. I told them that a sunburn is a sunburn and NO it isn't like a microwave and that I smell a rat in this story! _________________ Barkin with the Big Dog since April 2002 Mitzi [ This Message was edited by: Mitzi on 2002-06-04 12:44 ] |

Don,
Two things that were not reported, she has owned the bed since 1999, and she has never worn protective eyewear. I would like to write a reply at least on the whole "microwave" nonsense, do you have anything I can review before I send them a letter? |

Another important message from Chipp. Smart, well thought out and so very helpful... but hey, one more spam is one more spam.
Don, we are missing a point here... THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A PERFECT TEST TO TAKE TO COURT... THE MANUFACTURER COULD HAVE WON A BIT FOR THEMSELVES BUT A GIANT STEP FOR THE INDUSTRY. |

Can we sue her for been a greedy, and clearly cheap home tanner???
Anyone who spends hours in any bed and is only slightly red......there is a problem !! It is my guess they Both(hubbie and wife) Tanned the bulbs to death and INSTEAD of cheanging the bulbs.. they increased their tan time! Ahhhhhhh Let us all pray that they did not get paid enough by the bed manufacturer to open a new salon!!!! OHHHHH MYYY GAAWD no eyewear.....actually I should not be surprised. Tell you what just give Brenda her address and have Brenda send her a matt for free!!! But charge her $10.00 for a pair of winkease + $5.00 shipping.. LOL |

MJ:
I'll bet you a dollar to a donut that the woman couldn't come up with any medical bills if her life depended upon it. This smells like a "scam" from the start. FYI, IF a client should ever "claim" that they sunburned in a tanning salon, DO NOT try to "settle" the issue yourself. Call you insurance carrier IMMEDIATELY so that they can advise you regarding what to do. Remember, one of the things you get for your insurance money is to be "backed up" by professionals who deal with claims every day. Here's why you shouldn't try to resolve the matter yourself (even if the client only wants one hundred dollars). IF you pay the client and then later he/she decides to sue, your payment may be construed as an "admission of guilt" and make it difficult (if not impossible!) for the insurance company to "contest" the claim. Will giving a client a package of Insurance (a "bag" now since you can no longer get packets of Insurance) cause you problems? [Note: We have a few college students every year who tan for 4 or 5 minutes in a tanning bed and then go lay out on top of the sorority house roof for two hours and - guess what - they sunburn! We won't let them tan when they come back with a sunburn but we always give them a "bag" of insurance to ease the pain, even though the sunburn was caused by the sun, not a tanning bed.] No, giving tham an Insurance packet/bag won't cause you problems because that would be considered to be an "act of kindness" and not an admission of guilt. However, if a situation like I described above happens, go into the "Client Remarks" section of your computer program and "make a note" of the fact that they tanned outdoors and sunburned. If you don't have a computer, set up a "notebook" or record the information on their "client Card. The point is, write the information down while it is fresh in your mind. In this litigious society of ours, the "scammers" among us will try ANYTHING to make some easy money. Don |
