I am in the process of oppening a salon. Working on a handbook now, harder then I first imagined it would be. With so many little things that I had not thought about since I started reading this forum. If possible I would like to see a copy as well from one of you. cschiro@hotmail.com
Might be a good idea to put up a sticky (permanent copy) for those interested could read it and use what they needed.
Thanks!

Why don't the mod's post the manual here as a sticky? I have employee rules in writing and all employees sign the manual. The employees signature is witnessed by a third party, don't know about U.S. but in Canada a lawyer is not who makes an agreement legal it is the witness. Also there is a computer software system called "My Legal Assistant" It Formulates basic aggreements all the way from pre-nups to employee rules. It's the best 40 bucks I've spent all year!
ALong with the employee rules in writing, I implement a demerit point system. How it works is one demerit point is earned for anything that is done half-arsed or not done, or for any rule that is disrespected. Afetr 3 demerit points the ENTIRE staff, including myself are all docked an hour of pay. I have noticed this emphasizes the importance of team work and sets up young people with useable skills for their future. It also keeps my salon sparkling clean:-)!

Is it legal to dock their pay in Canada? I'm pretty sure we can't do that in the states.

Shameless opportunist that I am, I'm going to plug our magazine. The November Today's Image will have an article on violence in the workplace that explains why you need to have rules and have employees sign off on them. Included within your handbook or rules have to be policies on violence. The reason is that if an employee suffers violence and a case can be made that you did not have procedures or guidelines in place to offer sufficient protection, according to OSHA you're liable.
